i am interested in some of the more competitive fields (ophtho, derm, maybe anesthesia) and I scored a 238. one of my resident-friends says that 240 versus one or two points lower makes a HUUUUUUGE difference. what do you think? how are my odds for the competitive matches?

thanks ~

holy crap!!!! 238!?!?!?!?!? Did you have a stroke on the way to the testing site? WTF did you spend your time studying? Apparently you thought that school in the carribean was going to be all fun and games. You may think that the Ross name is just gonna open doors for you but with scores like that you're not going anywhere but family Practice in Okalhoma.

Is this a generic text you have saved. I swear I had seen this before.

Your resident friend needs to get laid. 1-2 points is NOT a big deal. You did well. Be proud of yourself. Just based on your Step 1 score, you'd be very competitive for anesthesia, competitive for ophtho, and okay for derm. I would focus on the other aspects of your application more (i.e. research, international experience, 3rd year grades, strong LOR's, honors during ophtho/derm rotations, etc). Once you've got the Sep 1 under your belt, these can make you or break you!

I know I replied with a similar answer to your post in the ophtho forum. Guess I just feel like procrastinating today 😉 . G'luck.

I would just add that anesthesia has seen a resurgence in terms of interest in the field. Nevertheless as an american grad. with a 230+ you should be able to get an interview at most top tier places in the country. It has been noted in the anesthesia forum however that some applicants with lesser scores with more personality at interview, great LORs etc. have faired better as the RDs want to make sure the guy/gal they are working with for 3/4 years is more than just a three digit score. Bottom line...if you are personable and interview with that score you'll do well. Good luck.

word for word, but I changed the score...given the prevelance of these types of posts I thought I would save some creative energy.
Do you think I should have made it harsher since this was an even better score than the first?

Sure, why not. Go all out if you feel like it.
