  1. Podiatry Student
Hey, I'm new to this forum or at least this part of it. I am applying to dental school but also thought about applying to podiatry school as well this Fall 2007 when the application opens up (for Fall 2008). I've read a bunch of the threads up but I had a few questions or things that may need clarification...

1.) There are only 8 schools and about half ( NYC, Temple, Ohio) will accept DAT scores?
2.) What would be a competitive DAT score for Podiatry School? (the AA score)
3.) What are about the gpas for students. Most schools sites say 3.0-3.2 average incoming. I'm right at the 3.12 overall mark with a slightly lower sci
4.) Is a personal statement required in the application and if so, what is the question and character limit?
5.) Did people who applied to Dental/Med school use the same LORs? And additionally got a practicing Podiatrist LOR? (I see Temple says it wants 2 LOR science faculty and 2 LOR health professionals - would say 1 Dentist and 1 Podiatrist be ok?)
6.) How do the 8 schools rank amongst one another?
7.) What is the number of applicants vs. acceptances (number of spots at each schools)

Thanks!

http://www.aacpm.org/, a forum search, or the school admissions offices will have most of these answers. Different schools have different reqs.

I'd probably avoid a LOR from a dentist for pod school.
That'd kinda makes it seem like you don't know what you want to go into and were hard up for LORs...

I was a predent for awhile and actually applied three times but after not getting in and after shadowing a podiatrist I am actually glad that I didn't get in. I wish that I would have shadowed a podiatrist sooner. Anyway to answer some of your questions. I don't know a lot but I can tell you from my experience. I was accepted to Scholl to start in the Fall of 2007 but I deferred to 2008. I was accepted with a 2.96 gpa and a 17AA on the DAT. I applied to Temple, NYU, Scholl, Ohio, DMU, and AZPOD. I received interviews for Temple, NYU, Scholl, and Ohio. DMU and AZPOD rejected me. I only went to the Scholl interview because it was my first choice and was accepted there a month after my interview. I applied in December which is a little late but I still was able to get a spot. I was done with school and I had actually moved across the country (Utah to Kentucky) so I had a little difficulty getting a letter from a science professor. I talked to Scholl and they said to just use an employer letter from a supervisor and a strong personal reference along with a letter from a podiatrist. I would strongly recommend not using a dentist as an LOR if you used to be predental. I was hit hard in my interview about being predental not because they don't like them, but because they want to make sure your committed to podiatry and not using it as an out because you didn't get in to dental school. They want you to be passionate about podiatry.

I think that all schools are good and I think you'll get excellent training at all of them so the best thing to do is to look at each school's webpage and decide which would be best for you, apply to them, and then interview. Scholl was my first choice and I really liked it when I went to interview there. I was accepted before getting the opportunity to interview anywhere else so I just decided to keep my money that I would have used for travel to the other schools and just go to Scholl. That however is a personal preference. For some it may be best to go to every interview and make your call afterwards. Some schools are going away from the DAT for the 2008 cycle so you might want to check with each school. But I would say that with a 3.12 and at least a 17AA on the DAT you should at least get an interview at the schools that will still be accepting the DAT.

Hello! I just wanted to say that ranking the 8 schools is pretty subjective. You may find that Scholl, DMU and Temple are at the top of many people's list because they have been around longer and the class sizes are much bigger therefore there will be more people representing them. From personal experience, I applied to schools in states that I would consider living in (CA, AZ, IA, & IL). I don't know if this was the best way to go but I'm happy with my decision.

I wish you well with your adventures as a prepod 🙂

I agree that they are subjective. But generally they are based on the middle to lower end of the student spectrum not on size or age of the school. Remember DMU was only founded in the 1980s (that maybe old for some of you but not us old farts) compared to NYCPM which was about 1911. Also class sizes is not accurate either. DMU is about 50-60, while NYCPM is about 120.

What I mean by student spectrum is take away the top 10% of all schools b/c they are good students no matter what the school, the middle and lower students make or break you. The quality of these students is generally based on entrance standards, DMU and Scholl have much higher standards. Therefore, it goes to reason that they have better to middle to lower end. Furthermore, they have higher board pass rates b/c they don't have a sharp drop off in academic ability. While ranking schools is very subjective, I think that pre-pods should look at outcomes. Why does school A have a higher average MCAT and GPA? Why does the same school have a higher board pass rate? What residency programs are these students getting into?

Don't go off of just the webpage. I hated Azpod webpage, and applied thinking I probably would not go there. ONce I visited etc., loved the place. If I would have relied on the webpage, I would be sol
