Does anyone have any useful or advice on Texas A&M, Scott and White program in Temple, Texas?😳

I did an advanced search and got very little info except a couple people's opinions that it is among the least desireable programs in Texas?😕

Does anyone actually know anything about the program? Is appealing to me because in small town, warm climate, has hematopathology fellowship.

Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.😎

Scott and White is a major teaching hospital that is the main referral center for all of Central Texas. There are 8 path residents, a hemepath fellow, and cytopathology fellow. There are about 30K surgicals/year and the cytology service is unusually active (so I'm told by the cytopath fellow who was at WashU last year).
The facilities are nice and there is good tech support. I haven't had to stay past 7pm grossing. The teaching is good. Graduating residents haven't had a problem finding jobs or fellowships.
The worst and best part of the program is Temple. I live literally 2 minutes from the hospital and there is no traffic. Average new homes run between 125-175k. My mortgage costs much less than I would be paying in rent in a large city. The bad aspect of Temple is that it is small, population 50,000. On the other hand, everything you could want is less than an hour away in the Round Rock/Austin area. Married people here like it. Single people hate it.

Hi Gene

Im not applying in path but I was wondering if you could help me out with some info abt Temple, TX. I am currently living in Austin where my husband works. Ive applied for the 07 match and I have an interview at Scott & White. Since it would be difficult for my husband to relocate at the moment im planning to rank Scott & White pretty high. I was just wondering how doable it is to live in, say, round rock or georgetown and commute, esp in intern year? How much time would it take on ave and what is the traffic like? I-35 these days seems awful with all the construction at least as far as round rock..not sure how it is up near temple though..any ideas?

There are a few people who commute back and forth from Austin to work at Scott and White. Some people live in Austin and also keep an apartment here in Temple. If you decide the commute, it's not that bad because you will be driving the opposite direction to all the traffic. North Austin southbound in terrible in the morning, but you'll be driving north. Same thing on the way home.
The commute from Georgetown is 30 minutes, Round Rock 45 minutes, and Austin 1-1.5 hours depending on where in Austin you're heading.
Scott and White is an extraordinarily nice teaching hospital (but not quite on par with Methodist Houston). It's also been named a Top 15 Major Teaching Hospital in the U.S. for two years now. I'm sure you'll enjoy your interview. Hope all this helps.

Thanks a lot! I definitely have a better idea of things..now i just need to get thru the interview! 🙂
