Does anyone know if application numbers are UP or down this year? AND what, if any, *real* chance does one have at scrambling into a spot, with slighly above avg grades/board scores? If I understand past posts, scrambling for EM is a generally futile endeavour. Anyone have any new info (predictions) to add for the scramble this year?

I dont' think scrambling into EM is an entirely *futile* attempt. In fact I know one super cool dude/chick that scrambled into a decent powerhouse. I most definately wouldn't "put all your eggs in one basket" and count on the scramble for a strong match. Make your ROL as long as possible, but do NOT put a program on your ROL you do not want to go to. Never ever.

I don't have any hard evidence or even anecdotal evidence for the # of apps. Our program is new and our first year at ERAS so I can't use that to judge. I"m sure you guys on the interview trail hear more than we do.

Q, DO

See the thread below: How Many EM Applicants This Year for the numbers discussion. As far as scrambling, the only applicant in the last 10 years from my med school that didn't get a spot scrambled in, so it isn't hopeless. There were 7 spots at Duke, 6 at Kalamazoo and about 20 others as I recall last year. You'll be having some serious competition for those spots, but it isn't hopeless.

I was offered many interviews, went to ten, ranked them all. Ended up matching at the very first place I interviewed.

Therefore, interviews needed to match =1. More can only help.
