this may be a bit silly, but its a legit question.
i take my final step (one repeat ugh) on feb 12th, hopefully in time to get a score report for the scramble. IF the score isnt back, will anyone even bother to look at me? any advice is much appreciated. i am FAMILY by the way 😉

No one will look at your application in scramble without Step2 results and ECFMG certificate, if applicable. Even with Step2 score ready, the scramble is terrible. Sorry to disappoint you, but there are many out there at that time with every thing more than complete.

Its true that other people will have more complete applications, but the OP said they were going for family med. There were a bunch of unfilled spots for family med (looking at the NRMP site it looks like about 20% of spots don't fill). I don't know how picky some of the programs that routinely go unfilled will be. However, OP, did you say that you had failed one of the steps? That could cause some problems unless you already retook that one and got a good score. On the other hand, if you don't care where you go you still might have a chance.

i failed step one after 4 solid months of studying. sort of took the wind out of my sails so i went on and finished my curriculum and knocked out cs/ck.
so now i am studying again for step one and after just coming off stepsck there is some overlapp so its feeling a bit better, i just wonder if i can scramble in to a family slot (ANYWHERE) while i wait for this score, or is it wiser to not worry about the scramble, and get my ducks in a row and try to find a spot post-scramble? is this do-able?

To participate in the scramble you have to enroll in the match. Without a passing score on Step 1, its unlikely you'll get any interviews, but it would make you eligible to receive scramble info - but at the cost of applying to programs that you might not have a chance at (depends on the deadlines for FP - has it passed already?)

if the deadlines to apply for the match have already passed, then your only option is post-scramble - there are generally several FP spots available, so you might luck out with that route.

hi,
yes i am in the match... and i didnt even apply with the score like that. but i am just trying to figure out my options just in case my core doesnt get back in time for the scramble. are there typically lots of family slots that NEVER get filled?

Since you are in the match, you will have access to unfilled programs. If you have all scores at that time, you can apply to 30 programs for free. Focus on the oncoming exam and many slots will show up after scramble. Good luck

thank you guys very much for your good advice 🙂
