I am a medical school applicant looking into scribing for a year prior to medical school but big scribing companies like ScribeAmerica require multi-year commitments. This has lead me to research just taking scribe training online and reaching out to potential employers but wanted to hear from others who may have done this. Does not being associated with a big company limit the job opportunities as some practices will only hire scribes from these big companies? Have you ever felt any sort of hesitation from employers in regards to hiring a "free lance" scribe? Is there any other way I can go about this process?

Generally speaking, there's no required commitment you have to fulfill. They'll just set a deadline for you and usually that deadline is convenient for them and not convenient for you (not because they're malicious but it's just the way it works out). Just make sure to read over whatever document they give you before you sign it! With that said, don't scribe if you're going to do it for less than 6 months. I mean you'll get good experience but it sucks for the physicians and their teams to have such quick turnover. In my experience, ideally you should aim for 9-12 months and with that, you'll leave happy and most providers will be happy as well. Obviously you should provide a minimum 2 weeks notice. The scribe companies will obviously prefer you stay longer (some especially if you leave before May / June) but that's their problem and they'll deal with it.

Edit: Also, in my personal opinion, online scribing sounds like it would suck and not be nearly as good of a experience.

These companies make great profit off pre-meds, I wouldn’t think twice about staying as long or as little as you need

I did scribeamerica online training my freshman year spring semester. During finals. It was an extremely stressful time for me.

It was hard but by the grace of God I passed. However, if you devote yourself to studying you should be fine.
