I only shadowed two primary care docs for about a day (8 hours) each. I was going to do more but got a job as a scribe, among other things, at a primary care clinic for the underserved. So I was attached to the doctor’s hip for the whole day, totaling thousands of hours. Will that make up for my lack of shadowing?

I also have a few hundreds hours volunteering and working in the ER. I didn’t work with other specialities since primary care and ER are the two fields I’m most interested in.

Yes, assuming your scribing experience was similar to shadowing. If I was you, I would just take some of the hours you scribed and label it as shadowing next to the primary care shadowing you did when you fill out your application. This is just to ensure that your app is not unintentionally set aside due to low shadowing hours. Again, only do this as long as you’re able to honestly say that your scribing experience was similar to shadowing.

It was in the sense that I was following the doctor as they went through patient visits. But also scribing, ordering tests, pulling charts, etc.

I suppose there were a few days of training where all I was doing was observing the doc...but putting that as shadowing seems shady to me for some reason since I was getting paid. Unless I specifically note those days were my orientation with the company?

I had minimal shadowing hours and thousands of scribing hours when I applied last year. Despite this, I had a very successful interview season and multiple acceptances. In my opinion, the scribing hours more than made up for the lower shadowing hours and was looked upon favorably by the programs I applied to. Be honest with your shadowing hours, volunteer hours, and scribe hours, and you'll be fine.

Again, at the end of the day do whatever makes you feel honest. If you’re granted an interview, I would assume they’d look at the details anyway. I don’t really see a problem with listing it as shadowing even if you’re getting paid because shadowing isn’t volunteering. It’s just for your benefit.

Awesome, thanks to all of you for the help!!
