I am going into Radiology and many family members have asked 'if they get sick/ run out of meds can I prescribe X?" Can Radiologists write med scripts for family/friends for simple things? Just wondering if this is common or frowned upon? Thanks, MM

With a valid medical license, radiologists can write prescriptions just like any other physician. After all, you'll have to write scripts for IR patients as well as pre-medication for patients with a contrast allergy. The only catch is that you need a DEA number to write for controlled substances.

Of course, my medical license says that I'm allowed to perform medicine and surgery in my state, but that doesn't mean I'm going to take out someone's appendix. Be careful not to start writing for unfamiliar meds, or you could get into trouble. As years go by, all that pharmacology in your brain will vaporize, and you may feel less comfortable writing even simple scripts.

I believe it is also dependant on the state whether family members can be involved. Indiana we had no problem getting scripts from my dad...but then we got to Florida and it became a problem...but for whatever reason it was ok for him to phone one into Pennsylvania when I ran out of a script another doc gave me and I needed it quick. Not being a physician and seeing this from a different perspective...It seems that people try to leech scripts off my dad all the time when they find out he is a doctor. He does it very sparingly and only for very basic things.
