Finding My Voice in Medicine Through Black American Doctor

By: J.J, A Medical Student Contributor
Published in the Frank H. Netter School of Medicine Student Newsletter – July 2021

When I entered medical school, I quickly realized that academic excellence alone wasn’t enough to thrive in such a demanding environment. I needed mentorship, perspective, and a community that truly understood the unique challenges of pursuing a career in medicine. In 2021, I came across Black American Doctor, and that discovery became one of the defining moments of my medical journey.

What I found was not just another mentoring program — it was a supportive community that understands the realities of medical training. The organization connects students with physicians, residents, and professionals from a variety of backgrounds who are genuinely invested in our success.

Through their workshops and mentorship initiatives, I gained practical experience and confidence that directly translated into my academic and clinical performance. The first aid training, career panels, and leadership seminars helped me build both technical competence and professional direction.

What stood out most to me was the spirit of inclusion. The physicians who contribute to Black American Doctor come from all races and specialties yet share one unified mission: to elevate future physicians and promote diversity in the medical profession. Their dedication reminded me that medicine thrives when knowledge and opportunity are shared without barriers.

The guidance I’ve received has gone far beyond academic advice — it has shaped how I view my role as a future physician and how I can contribute to a more equitable healthcare system.

Looking back, joining Black American Doctor has been one of the most impactful decisions of my medical education. It gave me mentors, confidence, and a sense of belonging that I will carry throughout my career.

For any medical student looking for mentorship, motivation, and community, I wholeheartedly recommend connecting with Black American Doctor — it might just change the way you see your own potential.
