the SDN average has to be above 250....

personally I did very well on this exam, (probably the 2nd highest score ive seen in the score thread)....but god damn, either SDN is the cutthroat student magnet or people just post wrong numbers.

half of this forum are IMGs ....so theoretically speaking... 232 average is for US students and about 10-15 points lower for IMGs. The actual average for CK is probably in the mid-low 220s if calculated for all test takers combined.

my only advice to the fellow students who are still studying for this exam, take everything you read with a grain of salt..especially from those with 1-2 posts on this forum .. you cannot get 260 from "just did UW and FA x 2 weeks, went out every night for a beer".

I second this.

The bolded should be obvious, but Im glad you made it explicit

Since this is a topic about honesty and having people ready for what to expect... here's some tidbits.

1. Average. The overall average for Step 2 this year was 233 +/- 22. Getting a 250 means you are still below the 85th percentile (<255).

2. Meaningful Strategy. UWorld + First Aid or Step Up (what I always recommend) getting you a 230 comes from personal experience with people I've tutored. Average students at an average school do average on the test (230s) using this strategy. This was an allopathic school.

3. Stellar Scores. People who get 250+ are probably studying and reviewing daily other content throughout 3rd year than are reviewing everything for two weeks in their "dedicated Step Study period" or they spend 8 weeks with Kaplan (like I did).

4. My Experience. I got in the 250s (which was above one SD the year I took it) using Kaplan Prep course, First Aid, and Uworld.

5. My validity. I have more than 1-2 posts.

I agree w/ above. Especially number 3. I got a 254 (almost 1 std dev above mean - 255) w/ a subpar step 1 score 233 (per sdn standards). SDN def self-selects for some "gunners" and ppl who scored well are more likely to post. I honestly don't think there's alot of false scores being posted on here as I hope that ppl have better things to do with their time. That being said, I worked my ass off 3rd year and honored most rotations, including the core ones - IM, Surg. I also had IM last and read just about everyday. This is not a crammable test, but if you put in the work throughout the year, I think it's def possible for an AMG to score well by just doing uworld and supplementing w/ a review book.

Back in July I took the last 30 scores vs. uworld posted to try and make up a correlation to predict performance (I missed the 100 cases sticky). Anyway, the average from those 30 posts was 254.

Sample size isn't huge, but it's still quite high compared to the national mean. There is obviously self-selection bias at play, and I think this ad-hoc study attests to that.

I 100% agree. I was fortunate enough to score very well, and I attribute it to busting my ass for step 1 and throughout third year. When friends ask what resources I used to so that they can also score in the 260s to make up for a bad step 1, I think it's important to say that the 2-week axiom does not apply and that they should study crazy hard.

I really honestly cannot tell you what makes a great test day and what makes a not so great one

I studied for 2 months for step 1, used DIT, did 1.5x passes through UW, read FA 4x, probably did some other crap I dont even remember, and got a 229.

For step 2 i studied 3 1/2 weeks, at least 2 hrs less per day, probably more, I did do DIT again, did only 80% of UW, and read Step up to step 2 twice. I got a 254 this time.

Honestly, if I had to guess why I did so much better the second time around, it was familiarity. Knowing the question styles so well that it was scary. It didn't matter what they were asking me, I kept knowing what they were looking for, and the right answers were just there.

I think I also grew up as a test taker in my third year. In the first two years of medical school, I could count on one hand how many times I did above average, and I never did well enough on any test to get in the HP/H range. Then step 1 came and went, and all the sudden in third year I was crushing shelf exams, high 80s, low 90s consistently.

My advice is to shift the balance away from reading books and more toward doing practice questions, as many as you can do. That is basically what I did. For the 100 question shelf exams, I probably did 1500 questions for each, and barely read at all. I just really studied my wrong answers.

There's definitely a selection bias, more so because if I got a 200, I probably wouldnt come here to tell everyone about it.

How did you do 1500 quest for surgery and other subjects? What resources did you use? I can see you doing it for medicine using uw. .. .

This is so true, the average on sdn is high but most people who do well on steo 2 have done well on step 1, and using the resources most people use on here, its not too hard to break 240 PROVIDED you did your work in med school. I have a lot of friends who tried the FA + UWorld + Kaplan Notes and ended up with 220s (their knowledge base wasnt that strong too begin with), thats why theres practice tests and qbank\ scores to asses your level of readiness. You gotta be pretty naive to think that the average kid breaks 250 barely skimming these resources.
