These forums are so full of great information and I love reading them, but I have to say, I always feel so bummed out after reading most of them. According to most of the people on here, I have no chance.

*sigh*

Good luck to everyone applying this cycle 🙂

Doom and gloom has scientifically been related to skeletal avatars. Get some meat on those bones.

I would advise taking the advice on here with a grain of salt. Most people here are pre-meds and many just have no idea what they're talking about. Nearly everyone here will say that you need a 30+/3.7+ to get into an MD program. I know several people who have 26/3.4 that have gotten in somewhere.

I must agree. It is sort of a general trend on forums for people to feel far more confident about their responses than in real life.

Many of the advices one gets here come from people who have been in a similar situation and are invaluable. However, many times (and I do this too), people speak so confidently about something as if they are in authority but the chances are they are just guessing.....

It's just a part of the whole online forum culture...

More importantly, I think you should realize that the SDN community is not very representative of the matriculating med student population. The people on this forum tend to be the best or the worst; that critical middle portion (the average pre-med) doesn't have much prominence here.

Damn it! haha

I agree. Granted that I see a lot more skeleton avatars on SDN than a usual forum because of the medical focus, the OP's avatar in particular is holding an hourglass and a scythe. Looks like someone's been too depressed lately.

To OP, I have made you a new avatar. I don't have any of my digital art software on hand, so all you get is something I did in Paint in the past 3 minutes:

See? Add the tag-line "Why so serious?" and the irony is complete.

😱 Did you have to magnify the image like 100x to work on an image that small?

I truly hope so
From not only the grades and the MCAT scores of so many applicants on SDN but the insane amount (and quality) of ECs they have also done... the whole medschool application is depressing, and make me soooooooooo soooooo anxious. I am always thinking how to I compare and I always get a negative vibe

yet I'm addicted

word... SDN humbles me. and stresses me out a bit =)

Yeah, I have to agree that SDN isn't very representative of the average pre-med applicant. That said, it's got a ton of useful information. The interview feedback database turned out to be clutch for me.

Don't let it get to you. And if it does, then call your mom. Mine still tells me I'm special.

I love SDN, it keeps me humble and helps me at the same time. I mean I thought I was the only one that went to through some of the crazy pre-med madness...

True story, I got placed on Ativan after my first week on these boards.

JK. 🙂 I do know what you mean though. I didn't get a 40T, 3.98 gpa, shadow for 6000 hours, and have not build homes in Botswana! I'm screwed.

Haha, yeah. I mean, my stats are right around average for accepted students, so in truth I have a good chance... But we'll see!

Wow - so much hate for my avatar!! I just picked one of the pre-made ones since I didn't make one.

I have so much pressure too. I registered here when I was a junior in high school. I am trying so hard to get everything perfect this year. My first semester of college will start soon.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Graduating to Pre-Allo!

I absolutely agree with you, Sammich. It's a love/hate relationship.

Plus, I got my first rejection today, so I feel especially loser-y.

Best of luck to you.

Same here, but you have to remember, although we do compete in a way against others to get into medical school, the real competition is within ourselves. Don't get caught up in comparing yourself to others; rather, work at representing the best possible version of yourself to medical schools. To me, the medical school application process is one psychological test, and you have control over how you handle it and yourself.

Wow,

I couldn't imagine starting here in high school!

actually, most of the ambitious hs kids are on CollegeConfidential. It's SDN for college admissions. I hung around there a lot, I'm addicted to forums and information.

CollegeConfidential has smart asses.

But hey SDN is cool. In opnion, I like it more than college confidential.

I like SDN too. Some of the people in the Lounge are dicks, but I like the site as a whole.

sigh.. yeah i know. i only decided i really wanted to do the whole med school thing in the middle of junior year, after debating if my family/future husband will be able to support me through it all..

i started all my med related activities (hospital volunteering, shadowing, whatev) THIS summer, while working in the lab and studying for mcat. i only found out about this place a few days before my mcat on aug 5.

i wish i had a 5 year plan or whatever in high school like most pre-meds i know

I wish I had known SDN in elementary school so I could be gunner studying a lot in high school. I would have definitely applied to BS/MD programs.

This statement is so phenomenal, I just wanted to make sure no one missed it. Hahaha.

lol, great responses here guys. I agree with mostly what everyone has said. SDN is a happy alternative to Facebook in my opinion. It provides a lot of information that should indeed be taken with a grain of salt. Someone above me also had an insightful idea of the premed journey. Don't waste time comparing yourself with others, rather compete against yourself and show the med schools how good YOU are, not how much better you are than everyone else... i believe this philosophy is healthier than constantly comparing yourself as so many of us tend to do

Very good advice. Your MDapps profile makes me cry though...how could I compete! :scared: lol.

Facebook provides you the information about other people. SDN gives you the information about the whole premed process.

I prefer SDN.

You're too young for the Lounge.

😛

It's their territory, a wild untamed land where only.... certain kinds of people hang out.

I feel like I don't want to know the answer to this. But what's the lounge?

It's just the section of SDN where you can talk about non-medical related things, it's way down at the bottom of the list of forums, check it out.

Now it depresses me because it seems like absolutely everyone has interview invites, and all I have is 1 rejection.

Boo.

I have 3, and no invites. Use this as your avatar.

Any luck with your apps yet? I'm a decent student, but I'm about middle of the pack (3.6/ 32Q), so it's really easy for schools to just overlook me. I'm hoping that won't happen.

Really, I'm just freaking out and hate this whole waiting game.

Yeah u are just freaking out too much, i know its hard to wait. I hate this feeling!!! I didnt take my mcat yet... And truth to be told dont know when to do it cuz ia almost done with all prerequisites.

Just remember that you are special and unique, i hope that you'll get accepted 😉 :xf:

You'll do just fine. Unless you're applying to top tier schools, those stats are better than middle of the pack. Just stick with it and be prepared to do your best at interviews and I bet you'll get several acceptances.

I guess I'm the only one but SDN actually made me like pre-meds more. I couldn't stand to be around them in undergrad and I stopped being pre-med myself for a while partially because of it. I don't know...SDN doesn't stress me out. I've seen much worse internet forums. People do generally help each other here. I know I've learned a lot. And it was so great having the MCAT forum on the day the scores were released. If anything, SDN calms me down.

Remember that you're one of the people who did really great though, so it can be hard to see others do so well despite putting in a ton of effort and not getting the same results. I worked really hard and was lucky enough to do really well on the MCAT just like you, but things don't work out that way for everyone and that is tough to deal with. I agree though, generally this place is very helpful and friendly, and some people worry a bit too much about others. It's natural though, especially in a field like this. I think most of us are very competitive people, even if it's a purely benign competition and not at the cost of anyone else's success.

Yeah SDN is great, i am loving it 😍
