I just saw another thread asking for help on personal statements, so I thought I'd start another centralized thread for people willing to read and critique AMCAS personal statements. Getting my statement critiqued really helped me last year.

If you're willing to help read and critique other people's personal statements, please add your name to the list and a few details about yourself if you want to. Please let us know if you're no longer able to help, and Phil or I will remove you from the master list. Thanks!

Some guidelines for getting your statement critiqued, if you're curious:
1) When you PM them, it would be nice if you said please and asked if they have time. If they can't get back to you, that's a good clue that they're too busy.

2) If they say they'll read your PS, and you don't hear from them in a few days, it's okay to send a polite PM asking if they're going to have time to get to it. No guilt trips here, please!

3) When they've sent you a critique, thank them!

Good luck with the application process, everyone!

2112_rush: I'm a first year med student. I'm really busy but I'll help as many of ya'll as I can.
anystream: UC Berkeley liberal arts major, applying for the 2010 cycle. I've read several essays already, and people have told me I give good advice. I tend to focus on themes and overall message.

aterrafirma: I'm a mildly non-traditional comp lit major starting med school at BCM this fall. While I volunteered extensively during undergrad and my gap year, I really had to prove my science aptitude and explain a lack of research in my personal statement. I worked as a writing tutor during my undergrad years and critiqued an ample share of college-bound essays; now that I've been through the writing process myself, I'd love to help out prospective students. PM me or send an email to [email protected].
beefballs: Willing to help even though it is late, just pm me for info
blahman: I'm happy to read personal statements. I'm an biology undergrad with extensive international background, having spent almost two decades overseas. Applying for 2007 cycle. Will respond in 1-2 days. PM or email [email protected]
bgreet: applying now, willing to help out others with their ps as long as they are willing to help me
blee: Just sent in my application for the 2006 entering class. I worked for five years in IT before going back to school last year, so I'm definitely a non-traditional applicant. Didn't major in English or anything, but I've spent most of my career poring over very poorly worded documents to make them palatable to our clients. I will have a turnaround time via email of 24-48 hours. [email protected].
cabrillo: I am in vacation until Sept 4 so I would love to help people with their personal statement. I am sending mine to a couple of SDNers to be revised as well. I believe in giving back with honesty. I have a dual degree in Biology and Natural Science. Applying for Medical School this year. My e-mail address is [email protected]
Calliope: Cornell University '04, one year research following this, MD/PhD student beginning in the fall, if you need help with writing statements for any part of applying for the dual degree.... email me [email protected]
CarleneM: entering med school class of '09. psych major, harvard grad, had a somewhat non-trad path to med school and statement reflects that. interviewers have commented they liked it, quoting specific lines so i'd like to think its good. pm statement to me and i'll get back to you in 1-2 days
CDarnay: S on MCAT , taking a year off and applying for entrance in 2006, willing to exchange/read others.
Cerberus: Applied disadvantaged - College Athletics, Non-Science Major. All my interviewers commented on my PS

Ctrhu: Practicing radiologist (attended med and law schools) been on medical school and residency admission committees. I can provide some constructive criticism. Include your CV along with your PS. [email protected]
D3student: 3rd year dental student, PM your statement and allow 3-4 days for me to get back to you.
dhoonlee: applied entering 2005, PM me your PS and leave your e-mail addy. I will reply with a "commented" Word document.
DoctorFunk: Entering c/o 2009. Biology major, English minor. PM your statement to me and give me 1-2 day turnaround for comments.

erahimy Baylor class of 2009. Undergrad at Michigan. Graduated 3 years, with a BS in Cellular & Molecular Bio (making me 20 yrs old). Had a nontraditional PS where I told a story about me and my father. Would be happy to read any PS out there. Just PM me.
eriol: accepted to medical school for this fall. Cornell class of '03, computer science major who changed career paths post-graduation. PM me and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

ForbiddenComma: Degree in journalism from Missouri, "T" on the MCAT writing, like most Mizzou J-school grads, I'm a bit of a Grammar Nazi 😛 . Admitted to med school this year. Email addy is markcardinal (at) yahoo.com

We upcoming applicants appreciate the SDN volunteers willing to help us with our personal statements. Really, we do.

But please please please, if you've decided that you're too busy to do this, LET US KNOW! If you really wanted to help, but won't be checking your inbox all summer, LET US KNOW! Better yet, DON'T PUT YOUR NAME DOWN TO BEGIN WITH.

Take your name off the list and at least PM the people who sent their personal statements saying politely that you can't do it...please??

It's completely understandable that after seeing your inbox flooded with dozens of personal statements, you decide not to open them all, but it's also disappointing for many of us when we send our essays to 5 people only to have...none of them respond.

Thanks

Then please also take note: when a poster specifically indicates not to send them any PSs during their finals week and/or until June, please follow their request and do not send them your PS the night before their first final while they are pulling an all-nighter with 6 more to follow on alternating days. If you do, please do not be angry at them for not immediately sending a response or even an explanation since you did not abide by their requests...it's not their fault! 😳

I wasn't aware of the acronym XUSOM, but I'm assuming it's Xavier University School of Medicine?

This needs to be compiled into a list or it's going to be very difficult to read. Then posters looking for editors just need to read the last post.

Psycho, Phil took care of everything! It's all on the first few posts. We add to the front instead of the back now. Everything is there. 👍
oops, sorry. i'm used to just reading the last posts of these kinds of threads.

Got some free time on my hands and would be willing to help out! I should be able to respond in 1-2 days. Send PS to me as a PM. I'm a non-traditional student - age 27, psych major, worked for several years in social work and I am entering med school in July 2005.

Phil or Littleroo,

Could one of you change my description, which seems to have gotten cut during some of the editing that went on in the thread before it became stickied?

Currently my description reads

PineappleGirl: Former Editor of an historical journal. I can usually send my edits within a few hours of receiving your PS.

I'd like to have this changed to I can send edits within a few hours most weekdays between 9 and 4. I had a couple people email me their PS over the long weekend and couldn't get back to them for several days because I was out of the office. Could you also add that I am post-bacc at BU, so people know where I am in the process?
Thanks,
PG

Let me know if this is okay, PineappleGirl

PineappleGirl: Former Editor of an historical journal, post-bacc student at Boston U. I can send edits within a few hours most weekdays between 9 and 4.

Phil,

That's great! Thanks! 🙂

blee: Just sent in my application for the 2006 entering class.

You're personal statement is impotant. Don't rely on the judgement of some random internet poster.

I had no idea how many PSs I'd get sent! 😱 Please change my turnaround time to be "a few days" instead of "1-2 days" ! Thanks!

Can you remove me for now? I have finals and can't do any more for the next month. Thanks 🙂

I currently have 457964 PSs in my inbox so if I could put myself on hold until I finish what I have that would be great. I will let you all know when I am ready for new ones.

Hey, I would like to be added to the list. I have finals until the middle of next week and have only just started working on my PS though, so could someone add me to the list starting next friday (June 10th)? Thanks!
[email protected]

🙂

Thanks blee! I added you to the master list.

I am a student at UC Berkeley and have taken several literature courses. I am currently working on my application and I am willing to exchange PS with anyone interested. Please add me to the list. Thanks!

Entering Harvard Med, class of 2009. I wrote a very personal PS last year, which ended up working out quite well for me -- interviews and acceptances at most places, and many interviews became centered around my PS. I'm willing to give some general feedback on the first five people who e-mail me (will be very busy the next couple of weeks, but I thought this would be the least I could do...) E-mail me at [email protected]

yeesh. okay, take me off the list now!! (i don't think i'm on it yet, but just so you know... i definitely already received more than five, so please stop sending me them! kthanks!)

Thanks!

[Edit by Phil Anthropist: littleroo has removed herself from the list at this time]

I'd be happy to-- I have some experience writing academic papers and have helped with fellowship personal statements in the past! If you're interested and i'll send you my email address.

Edited by Phil Anthropist: ilanahg, I added your name and description to the master list (posts 2-4 on page 1). Thanks for helping out!

Sorry, don't reply, just testing signature.

Please remove my name from the list for now. I've had a death in the family and life is rather overwhelming right now.

Edited by Phil Anthropist: Sorry to hear about your loss 🙁 I removed your name from the master list for now. Thanks for helping others out. 🙂

Master list on posts 2-4 on Page 1 of this thread

hello,

please remove my name from this list.

thanks 🙂

Hello All. New to this forum. I'm currently pursuing my PhD in epidemiology and putting my lit major to work by moonlighting at my school's writing center. My job start managed to coincide at the time of year med school applicants are frenetically writing their personal statements. I'm interested in reading essays as a way to augment my ability to critique the current deluge of premeds I see on the job. I'm not big on fixing grammar; I'd prefer to read an essay in need of structural changes. I took a nontraditional route to my current career, but I love my work and wish you all the best of luck.

I am clinical research coordinator in Boston applying for the class of 2010. We're in between studies right now, so I've got some free time. I might as well read some personal statements instead of uselessly reading SDN. About me: Female, research experience, volunteering, living abroad, biology major. Cheers!

Can you Please remove me from the list. ( I am about to start my summer rotation for my MD/PhD program so I am going to be much busier.)

Thanks

littleroo: would you add to my information that people need to include in thier PMs their email addresses so I can send them their statements as a Microsoft Word document as an attachment? I put it in on the other long thread, but it doesn't seem to have survived.

Thanks! Keep 'em coming, guys!

dubZteR and NSight8, thanks for helping out! I removed you from the master list.

flipflops81 and coxswain, I added you to the master list. Thanks for volunteering your help!

The master list is on posts 2-4 on page 1 of this thread.

You can add me on if anyone still needs help at this point. I'll be around till the 27th before heading off on vacation 🙂

I'm a female biochemist at a medical diagnostic company out in San Diego. Am 4 years out of college and have my masters in Medical Sciences from BU (post-bac program). I'm also hispanic and so most of my volunteer activities have centered around this. It was the primary focus of my PS, as a matter of fact.
