If I'm almost positive that I'll be attending a certain school, is it still worth it for me to go in for a second look? The plane ticket will cost me around $300. I'm thinking that I might want to go to check out the housing situation and maybe have a fun weekend while I'm at it. Good idea or not?

Its an excellent idea. Don't under estimate the importance of going back to solidify your choice, and to check out the living situation in person. If you're gonna go rent, you have to be able to ask around in person. Ask people where they live, what their rent is, etc. That alone is worth the $300 plane ticket to scope out where you're gonna live. Congrats, good luck, its an exciting time.

More info is always a good thing. Unless you are totally strapped, it will be a smart use of the cash.

Good chance to meet your future classmates.

Go, have fun, get a feel of the school/students while not in interview suits and being nervous about interviewing. The reason why most schools do this is have a more laidback day for the applicants to check out. I say go.

If you are thinking of living with other students, second look is a great time to meet potential roommates. Also, as someone said above, you should check out housing options and meet classmates! Definitely go.

Save your money.

How many future classmates are you going to run into by happenstance in one weekend. Do you want to spend the weekend hanging around the school hoping to run into someone who will either have time to talk to you or be one of your future classmates.

In the words of Steve Miller Band, take the money and run. Spend the money on something fun, exciting, questionable. Learn how to scubadive, order everything of the menu at hardee's, go white water rafting. Don't stress out about meeting people, that'll come soon enough.

Agreed. 99% sure is pretty good. You'll enjoy that money a lot more when you are partying over spring break during your first year.

Thanks for the replies guys. Meeting people is fun but I'm more curious about finding housing. How do you guys find apartments if you don't look at them 1st? And I'm currently in my year off between undergrad and med school so I'm already having a great time. Actually I'm getting a little anxious to start it up again. In some ways, my life feels like it's on hold.

Some people choose dorms sight-unseen. Some will find out what apartment complexes other med students live in and sign a 12 month lease, sight-unseen. Some schools will actively connect incoming students who are looking for roommates. That can be risky, but the payoff in terms of friendship and social contacts can be huge. Even if it doesn't work out, Hell, it's only a year.
