I got a several second look party invitations from programs where I interviewed. One of them mentioned " this is your last chance to make a final impression on us" while others said it's not required.

My worry is about funds. I can definitely attend the local one but not the ones where I need an air ticket!

Is it going to move me down the ROL at the programs if I don't attend?

Everywhere that I have interviewed at has said it will not impact your rank position. I personally am not going to any of the call-back parties because my schedule didn't work out. I think as long as you let them know you are interested in the program (thank you letters, e-mail questions, etc) you're fine. But I guess I'll find out come March :xf:

I thought I answered your question few weeks ago. The answer is NO. Programs don't really care whether you show up again or not. Especially in FM. They're the ones who have to give you the red carpet treatment.

Wow! I wouldn't go just because of the arrogance of such a statement. The invitation should have said it was a chance for you to meet some of the other faculty, residents, ask more questions, etc. They are just as much in need of impressing you as you them.

Seriously. Screw that crap.

2nd looks are the best time to see the residency in the day-to-day operations of things without doing a month-long rotation... not some voluntary opportunity for making a jack@ss out of yourself. Last chance to make an impression. Whatever. That statement lacks such social skills that I'd think twice about ranking that program, personally. Goes to show what kind of ******s are running that kind of joke program. It's a residency program, y'all, not a sorority.

And what the hell is a 2nd look party anyways? Talk about Awkward City... there better some dancing, serious booze, and people in costumes there for me to call it a party.

The only 2nd look party I'll go to is the one at 2 am, last call, with sufficient lighting. Just to be sure. Whatever. Save your money for the real party after the Match.

Some places I interviewed told me the residents had a huge say in the match- they did a slide show and showed slides of the various applicants, and they voted, booed, cheered etc. Other residencies told me the residents had no say, just the PD's and some faculty.

That being the case, I think it might have some affect if the residents have a significant contribution. But..... if you made a good impression with your initial interview I would not go - as you can probably only screw it up. In sales a rule of thumb is once you made the sale you stop talking, because more talking may actually talk them out of it.

If you believe you are on shaky ground, really want to be there, and residents have a large input into the selection process - then I would go.

I have not attended any of the second looks mostly because of $$. But also for time and the hassle of traveling.

Most of the programs are pretty chill about it, and no one made any big deal out of it. One program did get a little aggressive and wanted me to come for a dinner but I just couldn't do it. I was not local and besides it was only a dinner! Mostly, it was their aggression towards me that felt really uncomfortable. I liked them and all, but I felt like I was being really pressured and that made me uncomfortable.

This whole process is so strange and unfamiliar, I also feel like the programs are seasoned at this process while I am still very unfamiliar with all the subtleties of the match complexities.

That's a really good point. Thanks 👍

Yeah, too much "games playing" going on 😡

How do you know if you made a good impression?

I say you should go to if you can make it and it won't break the bank. It's a great chance to see how everyone interacts outside of work. Programs can hide a lot of things during an interview. It's much more difficult to hide stuff during a social event. You might just learn a lot about the program. You'll also probably meet a lot of your potential future classmates there. It's a great way to see if you think you'll be happy spending the next three years of your life there.

.

Well you can never "know" with 100% certainty. And even if you made a mediocre impression, you might still match if you rank them high and they rank you in the middle - the match process gives preference to the applicants from what I have read.

But I think you have or can get an idea of how you did. Does and how does the PD respond to emails after the interview (and if residents have a large role in the selection process, do and how do they respond) etc.

Has anyone received any of these second look party offers from programs in NY? I am only ranking 5 programs and my interviews were Nov./Dec. so it's been awhile since I have heard anything and I am getting nervous. I know people say keep in contact with programs but I don't want to just be annoying and I don't have any questions to ask them...
