Forgive my ignorance, but I was curious what a second look entailed. Is it student initiated in the fact that you must find morning rounds, morning report, noon conference and attend, or is it like a second interview day and they show you around?

I have read many posts on second looks and whether or not to do them, but was unable to find anything on what you do when you actually decide to take a second look. Any insight from someone who has done one would be greatly appreciated! 😍

A couple of programs I've interviewed at specifically said that they'd help out if you wanted to come for a second look (while adding that it would not affect your application), i.e. hook you up for rounds and maybe an intern to shadow for the day. I'm guessing most programs would be happy to do this if you contact their administrative person. The other option would be to contact one of the current residents that you met on interview day and ask them to set you up.

Is this a way of making yourself more competitive? Does it look good to second look a program? Or does it not matter? I always thought it would be more for the applicants benefit than the program. Plus if I had a good interview I wouldn't want to goto a program and make a ciritcal mistake cuz Im trying so hard to impress them.

From what I've read from the posts here, second looks don't make you any more competitive during the ranking process and they are purely for the benefit of the applicant. For me, I want to do second look because I have two programs I absolutely love and can't decide what to rank #1 and #2. I am hoping a second look will shed some light on the subject.
