I figured that I'd go ahead and start a thread for second look experiences - anybody out there that had a particularily striking (either + or - ), please share the wealth!
Here's my own:
Johns Hopkins:
The only second look I was able to do b/c of geography (from Tx., applied only to out of state schools). I had a very positive impression of the place (otherwise, why do a second look, right? 😛 ) but left slightly less so. The day started with meeting with the program coordinator and running into the PD- who knew me by name (always a plus!). Met up with the ACS to round, something I didn't get to do on my interview. Here, I was a little disappointed- 2 overnight admissions, both very soft calls with little teaching built in- although the ACS tried to get as much mileage out of it as possible. With little volume overnight, it was difficult to guage the amount of true "scut' being done by the interns and med students, it seems that everyone was pretty much left alone to do thier thing after rounding on the 2 new admits with the firm - the rest of the census seemed similiar to the new admits in regards to acuity and common problems - comm. acq. Pneumonia, etc. Noon conference that day was well attended and a strong topic, but the thing that really turned me off is that almost nobody seemed to be PAYING ATTENTION. Many of the residents were 2 way text paging eachother! My day ended with a firm attending meeting with the group to do an informal discussion for the interns and medical students.
Overall, I actually left JHU with a slightly downgraded impression of the place. I will still be ranking it, but not #1, which is where I had it for some time.
That's it- I would love to hear from anybody else, esp. anyone who did more than 1 second look!
