I am done with most of the interviews that 'matter' to me. I am interested in doing a second-look at one, maybe two programs. I am curious as to what people have heard or if you have gone on a second-look. I heard some programs have structured second-looks and others are pretty informal. Please share you experiences/knowledge. Thanks.

Heard it can only hurt. I heard this from multiple places.

UNLESS...it's an externship or "mini-externship". For instance, Oschner basically told us that they require you to spend at least a few days at their program if you want to match. But, go back for a day? It's likely to be almost as awkward as watching the tila tequila final key ceremony.

Are you kidding me? She found TRUE LOVE!!! It was like, the most touching thing I've ever seen on TV!

Cripes, I can't believe my wife insists on watching that show.

I too would like to know more about second looks..

WHy do some programs (mainly PDs) push me for it? "Well if your really interested set up a second look..." I alway say "sure" WHy do they want it so badly? Does it really effect ranking? Does it show interest?

Sometimes I get the vibe that, OK, I've cleard the screen, now come to second look for the next step.. and I mean I came to the interview, looked up the program online, what else do I have to gain by the awkward half day of pimping/pretending to be fascinated in the OR?

How many do people go on? Is it common to not go and match anyway?

Tila is a terrible actress. It was pretty obvious she was faking everything, and actually, they aren't renewing season 2 because she has had a long-term bf and is not really bi.

I Love New York is far more genuine and entertaining.

i too have heard that second looks can only hurt. you can tell them at the interview how much you want to go there or put it in your thank you but it is pretty hard to shine in a strange or where you don't know where anything is.... personally i think i would spend the day fumbling around looking for stuff and trying not to get in the residents way. there was a thread about this awhile ago...saying only do second looks if you are unsure of a place not to look more interested....

I was considering one because a place surprised me with how much I liked it. Assessing where I might "fit" the best has been far and away the hardest part of this process - and I believe one of the most important. If I do end up doing one, it'd simply be so I could see how the residents act through the day, how they are treated, how they treat each other when working, what kinds of stuff they talk about, etc. And so my wife could spend more time in the area at the same time, seeing if she might like living there. I definitely would not be there to show off any pathetic amount of knowledge or skill I have, but rather I'd be observing during an attempt to better grasp what I was only able to get a small rough estimate of during the dinner and interview - basically to better figure out just how much like these people I am, or am not.

Is it just me or does Tila Tequila's head look like one of those onion-things that you pull up out of the ground and throw at the bad guys in Super Mario 2?

I know multiple people that matched at places they did second looks at. Even for one day. It allows a program to know that you are very interested and serious about their program. I think most programs would rather have a happy good canidate who apperciates their oppurtunity rather then get somebody who ranked them lower on their list.

I don't get agonizing over second looks. You go for a job in the public sector they interview you at least twice, unless it's for a job in the mailroom. If you are going to spend three or four years at a program, don't you want to be sure that you really like it? i guess that if you had a really good experience with the first visit and you don't want to f it up, then don't go back.

The other thing I think is good about the second look is they see your face again, It's like a thank you note, only better.

Either way, it's not a huge decision.

Wow, a few days??? That is a little nuts and also physically impossible for me.
But I have heard amazing things about that program.
Maybe I should just cancel now though, a few days is insane. I have that interview at the very end and then I start rotations again and then I have my sub-I in medicine in Feb...
