Hey Everyone,

I applied to 11 schools last year with the following stats after graduating from Saint Louis University with a BA in English:

GPA: 3.29
Sci: 2.70
DAT: 19/20

The end result was being waitlisted at SIUE, UIC, and Creighton Univ.

Since I was not accepted, I have enrolled at Southern Illinois Univ. at Edwardsville to take some more upper division Biology in an attempt to try and bring up my science GPA. I already have two A+ from this summer so thats good so far. It has also been suggested to me that I retake my DAT in the near future to score into the 20's. I have re-applied to the above mentioned schools and to Nova Southeastern, Case Western Reserve, and Boston, none of which did I apply to last year.

Now that you know my situation, what do you think? What else can I do? Am I just S.O.L. or do I still stand a chance of being accepted my second time around?

Any help would be appreciated immensely!

John

Well it appears that you have a solid DAT score and a decent GPA. Maybe go for improving elsewhere. What about your shadowing? Extracurriculars? LOR? Most people concentrate all on GPA and DAT when thats not all the decision criterion. Try taking a look at your other areas and improve where its needed. Good luck!

i think iceman is correct, u do have what looks like soild dat and decent gpa's. i don't know why u would not have gotten at least 1 letter of acceptance. do u know the answer to that question? maybe u should call or visit the schools that u applied to and ask them why didn't i get in? and what can u do to improve your chances for the next cycle? if the dat and gpa wasn't the problem, maybe there is something else that all 11 schools saw that u could fix for 2005. or i could repeat that same idea again.... grr

good luck billykiny

When I contacted the schools I was told that applying out of state was a bad idea unless you had stellar numbers or that my science GPA was simply too low. I have good LOR and a decent amount of shadowing experience as well. BTW, how do you report your shadowing experience to the schools? I also am the son of two dentists so I am familiar with dentistry. I'm just not sure what else I can do at this point.

Thanks guys.

Has anyone been offered an interview this fall yet?

Did you apply late? You have very solid scores. Did any of those schools over you an interview?

I actually applied early-ish to the siue, uic, marquette, and iowa and pretty late to the others. The only school that offered me an interview was uic. I scheduled an interview with siue. My AADSAS application went out June 22nd this year so hopefully that will be early enough.

Have any applicants started interviewing yet?

Sounds to me like you applied to a lot of state schools where you have little to no chance of getting into. You should apply to more private schools next time around (schools such as Case, Detroit Mercy, Pitt, etc.), which do NOT have state preferences.

Yes, it might mean moving farther from home, but if dentistry is worth it to you, it's worth making some sacrifices.

HTH.
