I started pre-writing my secondaries and have a question about the "describe yourself" type essays. I have been over weight for most of my life but have lost roughly 25 lbs over the past 6 months with healthy eating and exercise. I've really learned to love this new lifestyle and even though I still have another 40-50 pounds to lose I am very happy with my progress thus far. Is this something I could possibly include in the 'describe yourself' essay? It has become such an important part of my life and I've learned so much about myself through this process that I feel compelled to talk about it. But at the same time I'm a bit worried about sounding frivolous.

Any advice appreciated!

I think it would be a great thing to include briefly. Don't dwell on it, but you could certainly mention it as a "Show, don't tell" type description of yourself which insinuated perseverance, goal-oriented mindset, and self control.

Congrats on the new healthy you! It's really comething to be proud of and must have taken a lot of work! 🙂

Best,
C

I always found with that secondary question, it is a great opportunity to highlight some of your quirkier or at least specific attributes, skills, experiences--everyone answering this question will be an engaged learner, a hard worker, and passionate about medicine. It is beyond important to show tangible evidence of how YOU are an engaged learner and YOU are a hard worker, in which case your personal story works really well (congrats by the way!) And if you have extra space and happened to be a backup dancer for Britney Spears in the Hit Me Baby One More Time era (probably a non-trad), were world ranked in baton twirling, or something like that, absolutely include this.
