Once you submit AMCAS (complete with MCAT scores), how long does it take to receive the secondary application... especially for schools that don't screen before secondaries?

I've read on the forums that sometimes it's the next day (via email). I'm not sure.

Well, since AMCAS isn't sending applications to schools until June 21st, we have until at least then. So you know you have at least another week to relax before they start coming. Unless, of course, you applied to a school that already has their secondary up on their website, then I suppose you could start at any time (even though they actually haven't sent you it yet).

Thanks! So once AMCAS submits the applications to medical schools (June 21), do they usually email out a secondary in the next few days? Could someone, maybe someone who's already gone through the app cycle, please confirm?

yes, the schools are pretty quick about sending you secondaries once amcas sends out your primary. remember also that you usually only have 2 weeks to send back your secondary once you get it so you may want to check out school websites to see if the secondary is already posted or if last year's is (usually they don't change too much from year to year). i think last year amcas didn't start sending out the apps until july 1, but i could be wrong about that. last year i submitted the day amcas opened, got secondaries in mid july, and had all my interviews in september.

Thanks, monkeymeg2. I have one more question.... on MD applicants, there is a profile with three dates listed regarding secondaries (received, submitted, complete). What is complete? Do the schools send a notification of some sort to applicants when their file is complete? There was quite a bit of time between the secondary submission date and complete date listed, so I was wondering.

Most schools send the secondary via email within a month (usually 1-2weeks) of getting the amcas submission. I don't think Tulane sends anything, you just print out everything from their website.

Most schools have a website where you can check your application status. If they don't, you just have to call them up and check. Tulane is one where you have to call them up. Also sometimes you might get a postcard from a school that tell you your file is complete.

A lot of the posts here are wrong. Some schools will send you a secondary as soon as your amcas is submitted, most wait until it is verified. There can be a big gap between the two (easily a month). After that, most schools will send you a secondary within a week or two at most. For me, the fastest response was Columbia, they e-mailed me the same day I submitted. (Then again, a lot of schools make their secondaries accessible from day 1, JHU is an example). Good luck.
