For secondary applications, is it usually recommended that you write about something that's not on your personal statement? I wrote about my trip to Africa as influential in pursuing public health as a part of my personal statement and thus the MD/MPH, but would it be okay if I wrote about that same thing in the secondary if it pertains?

I agree. They will read your app all at once, so you don't want them to look at your stats, looks at your ECs, read your personal statement, and then read a secondary essay that talks about the same thing they just read. Show them that you have more to you than just this experience. The only way I can see this working out is if you take a completely different angle.
