Some schools ask for an ambiguous situation that one has experienced - for example: "We are all navigating through challenging times at home and abroad, and physicians and physician-scientists must contend with many instances of uncertainty. Please describe a time when you faced a situation that was ambiguous, confusing, or uncertain, and how you navigated making a decision without complete information. (3000 Characters)"

I am thinking of two options right now:
  1. While working as a research assistant, there has been an experiment that everyone in the lab repeatedly tried but never worked properly (there would be different results each time). We all knew something was wrong with it but nobody knew what exactly the issue was. I set out to solve the problem, did a lot of research & background reading on it, and went on research forums to see what other people were saying. Based on all the research I came up with my own, entirely new protocol and started trial-and-erroring with it. Ended up changing the protocol about 3 times and finally had the experiment working properly. (There are also other options coming from my lab experience but this would be the one that can be described most clearly.)
  2. After one year in my Master's program I had the option to continue for a second year (to earn a research-based instead of course-based Master's degree). However there were a lot of uncertainty regarding finances, family support, whether it would serve my career goals the best, visa applications (I am international), etc., and I was really stuck between the decision to continue the degree or working as an RA. I spoke to a lot of people including my family, mentors, friends, and upperclassmen to gather information regarding my questions (including which option might best benefit me applying to medical school), and decided to graduate and work.
Thank you in advance for any advice/input!!!

I agree. Your first choice shows your problem-solving skills and doesn't really address the ambiguity aspect of the prompt.

We are currently experiencing times when research funding, financial aid, and visa status are under threat, and you must choose between continuing your education or returning home (or being sent home). Your second choice is the better choice.
