Whats this all about. What are the various modalities available? I have multiple problems that I would like to get fixed all at once (i.e. extraction, bridge, drill-n-fill). What is the limit to what one can get done at one sitting? Would this 'sedation dentistry' help in that regard? Would it be a good idea?

Most of the time sedation in a general dentist's office consists of just enough Versed to really relax you. You are still conscious but very, very amenable to whatever the dentist has to do to you. And you may not remember much of it.

It is good for people with dental fear or patients who just won't cooperate. The dentist can get in there and work without having to play psychiatrist/therapist in order to get the dentistry done.

If you are just a little bit nervous, nitrous oxide is a good option too.

BTW, you should find out how involved these extractions will be. I would definitely opt for sedation if you are having impacted wisdom teeth out. Other extractions and the bridges and fillings won't really be a big deal once you are anesthitized.

But ask your dentist; he's the best one to help you decide.

Like the last guy said, dental sedation can be 10mg pre-op Valium, general anesthesia in the OR, or anything in between. It completely depends on the patient's temperament and the complexity of the procedures, and your dentist can work out the particulars for your case when you discuss it with him/her.

I would be real cautious when working with a dentist that makes claims of sedation dentistry or "wake-up with a new smile" from Sedation DOCS. They claim they can "titrate" oral sedatives that have half-lives of many hours. Thay have no formal anesthesia training and have no experience with airway management. It is only a matter of time before they ruin the profession for the rest of us.
