Seeking advice, please! Should I continue my journey as a pre-med?

Hello everyone 🙂
I have a really awkward and bad stat at this moment with a very unusual situation, and would like to ask for some advices.

SO, this is what I have.

I started at a small private college as a nursing major(pre-nursing, of course). Attended for two years(2.94 gpa), and transferred to a local city college. I majored in Psychology there, and took bio 2, phys 1, chem 1, and chem 2 for pre-med......annnnnnnndddddddddd I fell.

I had a full time job and thought I can do full/part time school during evening and weekend.... and failed miserably. I was wrong for overestimating myself and burning myself out. After consistent F's of three semesters, I was kick out.

Yes, I did go through some tough situations and I did have some emotional instability, but I won't let that be an excuse anymore. I did mess up. I am fully responsible for it.

So, to get back on track, I quit all my job(s) and attended a community college for a spring semester and a summer session, took 23 cr in total, aced all my classes (4.0) and got readmitted to the previous city college.

I kept myself up just focusing in getting those A's, and so far took:
all the psych classes to fulfill the major req (about 30 credits in total)
Bio 1&2, Gen chem 1&2, and physics 1 - managed to get straight a's.
& Next semester im enrolled to take phys 2, orgo 1, and calc 2 (I took calc 1 a while ago and got an a)


So here's (finally) my question..
If I keep the A's going and ace the MCAT, Will I have a chance of getting into a med school?
MD, DO, I have no preference, except I would rather not go for a carribean school.

I guess it depends on how many credits you failed, but I don’t see why you shouldn’t be able to get into an MD or DO school at some point. You just have to get the GPA up to a point where it won’t get your app tossed in the trash. I hear that some schools really like to see a turn-around story like yours, as long as you don’t fall back into your old pattern. Of course, the MCAT, ECs, personal statement, and LORs have to be there as well.

I guess it depends on how many credits you failed, but I don’t see why you shouldn’t be able to get into an MD or DO school at some point. You just have to get the GPA up to a point where it won’t get your app tossed in the trash. Oh I failed good 45 credits...
and its definitely embarrassing, but I certainly do have myself back to how I should've been in the first place.
4.0 since I got back 2 years ago, and trying my best to keep it up.

I'm not taking MCAT anytime soon, but I am 100% in it to do my best. As for ec's, I have been volunteering at a local hospital for a year now. I don't know how much this counts, but been doing soup kitchen for 3 years too. Also, all my full time jobs (while I was failing) were in medical settings. Nothing fancy, but I did reception, billing, assisting, and scribing. I will be joining a professor's research project starting this fall too. Hopefully it goes far, but won't know yet.

So thats all I have for now. I know that no matter what I do my failing grades won't ever be dismissed. I just wanted to know if its worth continuing with the pre-reqs, esp since I'm done with my major requirement and I can just go on and find something else if I have way too slim of a chance...to none.

From the community college I have 4.0
Since I got back to the city college I have been keeping up with 4.0.
I don't exactly understand why, but when I get my current transcript from my current school it doesn't indicate my old scores. I have a whole separate transcript for the time before I got kicked out, which was 1.3.

I have 146 credits finished, and thats including the community college, the private nursing school, and some classes I passed before I got kicked out.

Without the grade replacement my current gpa is 2.6, science gap 2.7.
With all the classes I am planning on taking before applying, I can get them up to 3.0. That is, of course, if I keep up with the straight A's.


I can take harsh words. I would really like to know if I should really continue taking the pre-reqs. So I would really be grateful to hear your (and other people's) honest opinions.

I like you. You’re honest—I can see that. Keep getting A’s.

I would also suggest that taking the Mcat is worth it, but you will need a very high score to then apply DO. I think I’d want to get above 510 if I were you (I chose this arbitrarily).

The bottom line is, if you do this, you have a realistic shot (EDIT: realistic if you get that 3.0 sGPA and do very very well on the mcat). Predicting anything beyond that is impossible.

You are showing what you need to show with regards to improving your accedemic performance. You seem to be quite aware of the hole you’ve dug yourself into accedemicly and what it will take you to avoid getting screened out.
Keep getting good grades (As) nail your MCAT and apply smartly when it’s time and you might get some love.
It’s always a crapshoot and your odds are longer than most but some schools like students that have had to reinvent theirselves.

Getting kicked out is an institutional action which will have to be listed and addressed in your application. That means that you will have an additional opportunity to explain your situation at that time.

I do think that you are in one of those rare situations where a personal call from a professional with a connection to the medical school to the dean of admissions or even the big dean could get eyeballs on your application that might otherwise be overlooked. If you have any connections, however remote, use it when the time comes.

Yes, I am definitely aware of my big time failure, and know that I don't have any more room to mess up.

Unfortunately, my explanation of that time is way too cliché. Family trouble, a good friend's sudden death, depression, lack of time management.... I'm just hoping that one school can see that I learned my lesson and got back on track.

I do know some resident directors and med school professors, but I didn't think of using it until your advice... I'll definitely start reaching out to them. Thank you so much!!

GORO! oh my, youre the famous goro! I actually read that post of yours. In fact, I read every post of yours when I first started looking through sdn!

Your guide reinvention for premeds actually motivated me a lot! However I couldn't exactly find someone with a case as extreme as mine, and thought my mess up might have been unforgivable...
That yes coming from you, really is giving me a boost. I'll keep up my A's and hopefully I'll be posting a success story at some point!

I actually don't have an amazing story to tell...in fact my situation was super cliché. Hopefully that could be overlooked....hopefully. I am definitely trying my best to keep up my A's and studying super hard to ace MCAT.
