Seems like Pathology attracts both ends of the religiosity spectrum?

I'm an anesthesiologist, and I don't mean to interrupt the heated job market and swinger discussions, but I wanted to know if I'm just imagining things or there really is a trend.

I've noticed that Pathology seems to have an overrepresentation of both atheists (or even "anti-theists") and orthodox religious types.

The percentage of pathologists who wear hijabs (while low overall) is probably higher than that of any other specialty. I kind of understand the appeal to people who feel very compelled to dress/groom a certain way, to follow specific rituals and behavior restrictions. I'm sure it's also easier to adhere to these types of rules in pathology compared to other specialties, and it fits in with the stereotypical personality of someone who excels at anatomic pathology.

On the other hand, it seems like pathology also attracts people who are extremely averse to any type of rituals/supernatural belief. People who don't pray, believe in an afterlife, don't really like taking anything on "faith", tend to be incredibly cynical.

Pretty much every pathologist I've met (friends from med school, residency, etc.) falls into one of these two categories; I haven't really met anyone that falls in the middle. Though I guess they all seem to get along well enough.

Any thoughts on whether this is actually true/why it is?

Not sure there's much truth there. Yes, I'm an atheist, but several of my colleagues are religious but nowhere near fundamentalist or orthodox anything. I work with normal Christians, normal Jews, normal Buddhists, etc. I've worked with plenty of Muslims over the years, none of which wore hijab or any other obvious identifying garb. However, if someone did wear traditional garb pathology would likely be more accepting because there's no fear of offending your patients.

Over half the people come from other countries so yes you are probably going to see lots of different religions just on that alone.

This is a fascinating attempt at trolling from an intellectual angle, I expected nothing less from gas. I always picture gas guys sitting around smoking a pipe after work with a brandy snifter of Remy Martin wearing silk jackets plotting the enslavement of all the other medical specialties by using surgeons as their personal Rottweilers.

So under the cover of an intellectual nonfactual you present a hypothesis that pathologists are either 1. potentially radicalized Islamist headscarf wearing nutjobs OR 2. Nihilistic potentially psychopathic emotionally disconnected nutjobs.

Im picturing what you look like and where you are. Im thinking you are right now somewhere in New York and you are a white male originally from the South but ended up taking a medical or residency slot in New England. The world in New England is a bizarre landscape to you of multicultural politically correct slop that you hope to escape from as soon as possible and return to a town outside the farm your grandparents owned in rural Kentucky.

FYI, where you are now is NOTHING like what Pathology is everywhere else. You are looking through the keyhole of a rotten New England door and trying to generalize to entire world beyond that door. I have found zero connection between religious beliefs, philosophical metaphysical musings or even politics and peoples' choice of medical specialty and I sir have been almost everywhere...

I always thought the gas guys were the pervs.

This original post strikes me as the first step in a long and winding process that ends with an appearance in a local news article about a disgraced local doctor, complete with disheveled mug shot.

I am a born again atheist. I mean it.
Swear to God

I though this is funny thread too.
