I'm an anesthesiologist, and I don't mean to interrupt the heated job market and swinger discussions, but I wanted to know if I'm just imagining things or there really is a trend.
I've noticed that Pathology seems to have an overrepresentation of both atheists (or even "anti-theists") and orthodox religious types.
The percentage of pathologists who wear hijabs (while low overall) is probably higher than that of any other specialty. I kind of understand the appeal to people who feel very compelled to dress/groom a certain way, to follow specific rituals and behavior restrictions. I'm sure it's also easier to adhere to these types of rules in pathology compared to other specialties, and it fits in with the stereotypical personality of someone who excels at anatomic pathology.
On the other hand, it seems like pathology also attracts people who are extremely averse to any type of rituals/supernatural belief. People who don't pray, believe in an afterlife, don't really like taking anything on "faith", tend to be incredibly cynical.
Pretty much every pathologist I've met (friends from med school, residency, etc.) falls into one of these two categories; I haven't really met anyone that falls in the middle. Though I guess they all seem to get along well enough.
Any thoughts on whether this is actually true/why it is?
