Sorry, you wanted the what-for too. Dilantin for grand mal. Probably used for any other motor seizures, but you'd have to ask someone more in the know than me.

From the epilepsy project website, the current most widely used epilepsy meds are:
* Carbamazepine
* Carbatrol
* Clonazepam
* Depakene
* Depakote
* Depakote ER
* Diastat
* Dilantin
* Felbatol
* Frisium
* Gabapentin
* Gabitril
* Keppra
* Klonopin
* Lamictal
* Lyrica
* Mysoline
* Neurontin
* Phenobarbital
* Phenytek
* Phenytoin
* Sabril
* Tegretol
* Tegretol XR
* Topamax
* Trileptal
* Valproic Acid
* Zarontin
* Zonegran

Yes, there are a bunch of them. As a paramedic in the field I've routinely seen at least 10 of those used for history of grand mal seizures.

bad drug for the long term though. so's phenobarbital-- they're good at stopping seizures temporarily but have long term side effects and phenobarbital interacts with everything. shadowed an epileptologist for a year and found that the drugs he has the most faith in include depakote and lamictal.

agreed, silas, but still a VERY common drug. Many people do take it for long-term and the side effects aren't great. Unfortunately, it's also one the HMOs and insurance people love to cover 'cuz it's one of the cheaper ones. The newer drugs with less side effects and better long-term effects/outcomes are often not covered. You'll find lots of people end up going for the cheapest drugs because they just can't afford the latest and greatest and best for them.

I think you are confusing seizure as a side effect or symptom of withdrawal which can occur with alprazolam along with many, many other medications (alcohol, buproprion, etc). When you look for drugs to treat seizures - look for the term anticonvulsant. There are really very few benzodiazepines which are really used as anticonvulsants - diazepam being the original one. You'll also find anticonvulsants are one of the most frequently used medications which have many "off-label" uses (for depression, pain management, restless leg syndrome, etc...) So....don't assume patients on one of these medications actually has a seizure disorder.
