I was doing a search on FREIDA and saw that there were a lot of listings for "selective pathology" under the subspecialty/fellowship column. What exactly is this?

To my knowledge it refers to all pathology fellowships that don't end in eligibility for board certification in that specialty. Examples are GI, breast, GU, and surg path.

The term "selective" when used to prefix a pathology fellowship title also tends to imply ACGME accreditation for that fellowship. In other words, not all general surg path/subspecialty surg path fellowships are ACGME-accredited.

Part of the reason these non-boardable fellowships sought ACGME accreditation was because of J-1 'shippers who needed to be in ACGME-accredited training programs, or would otherwise face being kicked out of the country.
