Semicolons in sentence-limited secondaries

The USC secondary has several essay prompts that require applicants to answer in 3-5 sentences. Do you think it could be detrimental to your application to write longer, more complex sentences than you might typically using semicolons, em-dashes, etc.? Are ADCOMMs likely to view this as trying to follow the letter but not the spirit of the rules? Are ADCOMMs likely to count this against applicants? Or am I being paranoid?
