Send interest email to programs?

Hi, i couldn't find any recent threads regarding this. Is it appropriate to send interest emails to programs now?
I know that my number 1 program has sent interview invites already, but I have not gotten one yet. Can i send an email to let them know I'm interested?

you can try to send them an email and say why you like them and why you think you would be a good fit there
i did this last year when i got radio silence from my going in number 1 - still got radio silence so it did not help but i figured it could not hurt
