I want to send some update letter to some schools that I've applied to and have not heard back from.
I've already read some past threads about this but I don't have any current pubs or semester grades as I'm in a gap year.
However I did get involved volunteering in a community outreach program, free health clinic, sliding scale clinic and youth mentorship.

Does that warrant an update letter at all? I do want to show interest.

Not worth it.

They already know that you're interested...you sent them an app.

When did you start with these new programs?
How many hours have you accumulated with each?
Was your original application weak in any of these areas?

Is there anything else I can send as a non-student then? I read some schools are receptive to update letters. But not sure what I can send.

Some last month and some this month so not too many hours. But for both clinic programs I have a 6 month time commitment.
My application is pretty strong in these areas as its something I'd like to do during/after med school.
Most schools I applied to were mission based around this.

Sending this update will not strengthen your desirability as a future student. Had you been weak in those areas, I'd have suggested waiting until a reasonable number of hours had been accumulated before communicating with schools, as the new initiatives may have changed views of your candidacy.

That said, some schools love candidates to stay in touch, just so they get confirmation of ongoing interest in their school. This is generally made clear on websites or can be found in School-Specific Discussions threads (at the top of the main pre-med forum). For such schools ONLY, you can use these new activities as an excuse for a communication. You might also include a one or two sentence statement about why the school is perfect for you, if that wasn't covered in the Secondary already.

For schools that explicitly state that pre-interview communications are not welcomed, I strongly suggest abiding by that "line in the sand."
