Hi all,

I have a few questions about sending in application materials. Most of my apps are online, and most of them are completed. However, I am still waiting on transcripts/LOR, which I will be sending in separately via postal mail. I have already sent in my GRE scores, weekly ago actually. Would it be okay to send in the online apps/fee this week, but send in the rest of the materials in a few weeks? Should it all be done at once? I suppose the schools must have some way to make sure it all goes to the same place.

Also, one of the programs only accepts LOR online, and will only send the form to the recommenders after I apply/send the fee. So...my thought is that I should hurry up and send this application in.

Any thoughts?

It's pretty typical that materials will arrive at different times, especially if some of it needs to be submitted online, some through the mail, and some directly for LOR writers or universities. Schools will keep a file for you and get all of your materials to the same place (many provide an online record so you can see when they receive each of your materials).

This is my 2nd time around -- what I found worked well last year is to mail as much as I could in one package and to always include a cover letter.

My letter just said I was including supplementary materials for an online app, listed what was in the package, and noted any missing items (telling them where to find it, i.e. being sent directly from university or prof).

Oh, and I always put my name, program name, and Date of birth (sometime SS#, if the school requested it) on both the cover sheet and each item in the package.

Last year was a bust in every other way, but all my apps were complete... 😛

thats great advice!! thanks!

do people typically include a self-addressed (and stamped) post card in their package for admissions to send off in acknowledgement of receiving the package?

I'm still working on my personal statements, some of which need to be submitted at the time of the online application...

But I was wondering if its okay to have my transcripts and LORs sent 'before' I submit my online application. Will the schools not have a file on me until the online part is done? (I'm assuming so, but it'd be great if not)

I'm sure that's fine as well. I'm sending online stuff this week and everything else in a few weeks. But either way, they'll get it all.

When do you think we should start bothering our writers for letters of rec to get it in? I would hate for that to be the reason why my application is not complete...

I am wondering about this as well. For some of my schools, I was not planning on submitting the online application for a few weeks as I refine my essay but I realized just now that some of my letter writers are already sending letters to these schools. Will they just get thrown away, or will they start a file with those? Is this dependent on the school?

I guess I am hoping there is a standard answer so I don't have to spend my entire lunch break tomorrow trying to call seven schools...

Oops. I just saw Student4Life0 may have answered this-- anybody else (with firsthand experience, maybe)?
