I am applying to 10 medical schools. I have everything ready for my application with the exception of one letter recommendation (I will have all other letters except one). I have a science faculty writing me a letter, but he said he won't be able to get it done until mid- to late-July (deadline is July 14th at the moment). My stats are fairly low: GPA 3.5, sGPA 3.3, MCAT 502. I am worried that the medical schools I am applying to will not consider my app since I am submitting so late. Is there any way to get around this problem (such as emailing schools individually and asking them about sending the letter later while still submitting the app), or should I just submit my primary app during mid-July and hope for the best?

Edit: I am also applying to 13 DO schools.

Only applying to 10 schools with your stats is risky.

I don’t think your timeline for submission (mid-July) is horribly late.

You should really add more schools or you may be disappointed. That is, unless the rest of your app is grade A.

Make sure your state (or friendly-to-residents-from-your-state) school is in the mix!

Thank you for the response! I am applying to 13 DO schools as well, and after looking through the MSAR, I picked 10 schools that fit my stats and what I wanted out of schools.

I am applying to most of the schools in my state (Ohio), and most others are in Southeast US area.

I am only really worried because I know most people submit their apps in the first couple of weeks of June. I just hope I have a chance with schools if I submit it in the later days of July! I am going to email the person writing my letter and ask if he could write it any earlier (if possible).

Apply June 1 or whenever it opens up. That way you’ll be verified and your app sent to schools in the first batch near the end of June. You letter writer can upload the letter when it’s ready. Who set the July 14 date? If you wait to apply you might be in a queue for verification for several weeks, meaning your app won’t get to schools until August sometime.

I am using Interfolio, but I could ask him to submit it to both the letter holding system and send him the AAMC request form so he can just submit it through there and I am able to submit my application. He set the date for July 14th, but I am going to email him tonight and ask if he could get it in during early to mid June instead because of the circumstances. Thank you for the information!

What are the 10 MD schools you are applying too?

1. Florida State University College of Medicine
2. Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine
3. Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine
4. Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine
5. Northeast Ohio Medical University
6. Nova Southeastern University Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine
7. Ohio State University College of Medicine
8. The University of Toledo College of Medicine
9. University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville
10. Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine

I am also applying to 13 DO schools. My state of residency is Ohio.

What is your state of residency?

You school list most likely has many state schools for states you are not a resident of and that have a high In-State bias

You should remove these schools from your MD list:
FSU
Marshal
South Carolina
Medical University of South Carolina

The schools you listed below do have an in-state bias, but there are still a fair amount of people accepted from out of state (except for FSU, I am applying to this one just to see if I would even have a chance, because I want to live in Florida eventually and I have connections to Florida). Obviously, I am taking a chance on those you listed, especially with my lower stats, but I hope the fact that I fit the academic criteria and I have above average EC's will help me to stand out as an applicant, even if I am OOS. I might add some of the schools you recommended on my last post though, just to increase my chances!

Sounds good, wish you the best of luck this coming cycle!

You could also add some of the new MD schools as well NOVA MD in Florida would be good with your geographical preference. Some others are Seton Hall and California University

It might be helpful to get some advice from the adcoms here as well @Goro and @Faha . They might suggest some schools that were not on your radar.

With stats that low, I cannot recommend MD schools except your state schools.
