Hey guys, I did a search in the forum but couldn't find the answer I was looking for.

I did find the working with animals in a laboratory DOES qualify as veterinary experiance, but if you did this within a class say cell is DOESN'T count.

In our school we have to take senior research it is a class per se as we get graded, but you work independtly or with a small group (I worked independtly) under a professor of your choice (this also means continuing his/her research most of the time). This class is a semester or longer of research which culminates in research paper that probably will not be published, but some of your info, or research may be included in larger paper y'know. Also it is required to have a research presentation at the end.

Anyways.. sorry.. I have a hard time getting out what needs to be said. I took a senior research class that followed the same guidelines (paper, presentation, independent research) where i worked on two projects most of the semester, one being where I harvested neural stem cells from fetal mice, I sacrificed the mice, and performed essentially a c-section?? I can't find the word I am looking for.. removed uterine horns, remove fetuses, blah blah.. This was under the direction of a PhD.

Would that count as veterinary experience?

Also I worked on an another independent research project that was created by myself/my partner that stemmed from a class, and was essentially a part of it. Again worked with animals horses/testing fecal rate of colonization in a neonatal foal. This again was under the direction of a PhD.

Would that count as animal experience? Or even as veterinary experience?

I would say no to both counts, unfortunately. What I've found is that experience gained as part of a class does not count as vet experience (because, essentially, you were getting the 'experience' as part of a school assignment). If you did the same procedures with this same PhD outside of the classroom (independent research) then it would definitely count. I would contact the schools you wish to apply to, or VMCAS in general.

It was independent research.. ? I didn't do work in a classroom setting or time frame.

Sorry if I misunderstood. Your third paragraph sounds like something I, personally, would count as vet experience. But then in the fourth paragraph, you wrote "research class," so I guess that's what I was confused about.

If you're class is written as "Independent Study" or something like that on your transcript, then I would count that as vet experience (or animal, depending on the professor's credentials). If the class was "Senior Research" or "______ Lab," I would be a bit more hesitant about calling them vet experience. Did that make more sense?

Yes more so.. I'm just confused and with the deadline nearing.. I'm sure everyone is just on edge.

It was like a senior thesis, but they have it as set credits.

I worked only in the lab, most of the time by myself with some guidance from my professor. Doing my research.

This sounds like what I did in college. I had a research project, in a real lab (not a lab class) and I received credits and wrote a thesis-type paper about the work. I counted this as vet experience. It wasn't a class and I, with the PI, directed my own project. So if this was similar to your experience, than yes I say it can be research experience, which qualifies to go under vet experience in VMCAS.
