I know dentist went on to do JD and MBA. and switched career.

I work in the film industry. Been a dentist 24 years. Breaks up the week. know an opthamologist who does the same thing.

I know 1 who went to law school and is now practicing dentistry again.
And 1 who went back to get a Phd in microbiology.

A female in my graduating class, practiced as a GP for just over a year after graduation, left the dental profession for 5+ years to work as an interior designer/decorator, and is now back in dentistry just finishing up her ortho residency.

Plus, I know of 3 others that graduated either in my class year or in the surrounding 3 years from when I graduated that left "wet fingered" dentistry for "dry fingered" dentistry (i.e. insurance company claims evals, product sales/info for dental manufacturers, etc)

I am thinking of opening an optical shop after retiring from dentistry in a few years. It's an extraordinarily profitable business yet seemingly so relax and easy. Lenses are 50cents apiece and glasses are $1 each but the markup is stratospherically high.

My dad is a dentist. He went to law school in his mid 40's, got his JD, and then continued to practice dentistry. He said he wanted to go to law school just because he could, not to practice. Now his office sign says:

Dr. Cymbidium's Dad, DMD
Cymbidium's Dad, Esq.

That's about all he uses it for - his office sign.

I saw that story lately as well. I can't even imagine why somebody would screw their professional careers by doing something like that, not to mention its a horrible act when people trust you. It takes so much time and effort to get to that point, yet in an instant he destroyed it all, so sad.

And to add to the list of extra-dental careers, after I retire from dentistry someday, I've always considered becoming a senator!

But I should probably just worry about starting dental school in the fall first.

I've heard some dentists and doctors from developing countries go to nursing school so they can work in the US. That is sad, but come to think of it, we would be getting the best nurses there is.

Dai, my friend went to med school after graduation. I also have come across a maxillofacial surgeon with both a DDS and MD degree. I am just not sure which came first, the DDS or MD. I don't have any statistics, but I think that's not a bad deal....

I was talking about an oral surgeon from another country. Things might be different over there. No0bs....

hello to everybody, I am an italian dentist, and I am tired of my job.
I was thinking about getting an MBA, does anybody knows what kind of opportunities will I have as a dentist with an MBA?

Yeah, you would have a bunch of nurses that think they are too good to empty a bedpan, place a foley and ambulate patients

That's food for thought, but these are basically the job of the LVN or probably the CNA. Even dedicated RNs would hesitate doing those. The docs I was talking about are training to be RN. Then again, that might be true for them too. My point was that this is a waste of talent, but not a total waste.

i know of a soon to be 4th year student who went to wait tables and then decided he should sell suits.

wait he/she was kicked out because of the poor attendance in clinics. yep, attendance.

I know a dentist who 2 years out of DS, went to lawschool and she now works in corporate law. I also know a MD who after internship, went to work for a health care IT company where he now is a VP. I know another MD who is pretty fresh out of school but who has already applied for a spot to become an interior decorator.

As for other professionals switching to dentistry, one of my fellow students in dental school had a degree in business before starting DS. She is one of the busiest dentists I know 😀 I know at least two dental technichians who became dentists and a guy 2 years behind me in dental school was an electrician for 10 years before he decided to follow his younger brother's example and become a dentist.

most of the dentist who are practitioners " dentists" remain dentists because:
1) it is one of the most respected jobs in USA
2) one of the highest money making
3) one of the expensive field to get into with great outcome
4) one of the most competetive ones too
however, those who change career, are those that:
1) couldn't get their license
2) their license has been provoked, suspended and they have no choice
3) droped outa dent school
however, it sounds stupid going through all these years of hard work, passing NBDE I and II and passing clinical exams and changing career.
who knows..
I had a friend in the second year, who was treating an " HIV" pt. he injected a needle accidently to his fingere with a little blood of the pt. They took him to an emergancy, tested him. after that day, I didn't see him no more cuz his family thought that dentistry is dangerous. He changed his career and became an engineer.

Some dentists marry someone rich, and then sit at home playing x-box all day. I'm considering that as my backup plan.

Other options include: Lawyers, MBA, Restaurant/Cafe, Photography, Consulting, Faculty positions at medical/dental schools/community colleges, and professional gambling.
