as a third year, how do we be proactive about setting stuff up for 4th year? like audition rotations, SLOE's, what's the general time line you should have things done by? our school does not help us with any of this.

For aways, many go through VSAS. Applications for those are usually in March-ish. For programs that don’t require VSAS, they do have paper applications. They all explain what you need for an application. For two of my aways for FM, it required me emailing asking for availability and then submitting an application.

SLOEs are EM specific, but, if youre doing a sub-i they’ll know you need those.

You need to have things ready by march. To be on the safe side I would have at least a workable personal statement, a LOR from an EM doc, and maybe a Letter of intent depending on the program. I would shoot for 3 aways with 2 complete before sept. I am not certain if you can pick which SLOEs so you need the EM peeps to comment on that. Lots of stuff opens in march. Some randos are available earlier. Most people at my school set up non-vsas rotations and then cancelled them if they got better stuff later.

Be on top of Non-VSAS programs.

Our school did a terrible job preparing us and made it sound like VSAS/local rotations would be all we need. Turns out TONS of programs don't use VSAS so if there's a place you want to go reach out to them early.

Both of my aways are non-VSAS and i had my applications into them in january.

I only know ortho but for us most audition applications and/or signing up starts around December of your 3rd year. Check on the respective websites and AOA opportunities website (for former AOA) for the program coordinator’s contact information and email them to determine their process and deadlines as each program is different.

Is EM an outlier in needing a LOR to apply for audition rotations or is that true for all specialties?

I don't think all EM require it, but its the new thing for most specialties now to weed out people. I would much rather have one and not need it then the other way. The requirements are getting ridiculous at this point, but that is all part of expansion of med students.

Back to what I mentioned earlier..
The FM program that is my #1 i followed up with about doing a sub-i for fourth year and they did mentioned they had a paper application that was released in January.

If you have an interest in any program, know this stuff early, especially if they dont use VSAS.

does the LOR from the EM doc have to be from a program with a residency, or somewhere I rotated this year? can it be from an EM doc i have worked with previously?
