Hi! I'm wondering about SGU's 3rd year rotations. There seems to be a little bit of mystery about how it's determined where a student goes for the core rotations. I've heard it's by class rank. Any truth to this?

Also does anyone know how many spots each site has for the main rotations? I know the states for the cores are: NY, NJ, CT, CA, FL and MI…. Location doesn't better much to me but I was thinking it would be better to go where the majority of students weren't going to get more hands on experience would be ideal.

Thanks!

When I was at SGU, it was harder to get Calfornia rotations than NY/NJ ones, so class rank might have come into play there. However, we ranked our three choices for core rotations, and generally would get our first choice.

Supposedly it is not by class rank. You used to rank your top 3 sites. I think now it is by state or region. You may still get to give a reason for wanting a particular place (family close by to live with). You will get plenty of hands on expierance at any of the places if you make an effort.

Thanks Top Gun & drcrispmd! That clears it up.

About going where the majority of students don't go; of course the effort will be there. But coming from a small community where the experience is more one on one vs. one & a crowd 3+ people deep to see procedures, etc. can make a little bit of difference on the learning experience. Unless I'm wrong about how 3rd & 4th year rotations go …. rotating around in "small" groups & getting hands on experience….

The larger hospital in NY and NJ will give you plenty of hands on experience. There is a huge immigrant population so you will see a lot more diagnosis than you will at a smaller place. On my surgery rotation there were 8 students and more than enough to go around.
