Hello. I am about to begin my medical school journey at St. George University. I am looking to find a cheaper health insurance plan and was wondering if anyone had found any that were complient with the New health care act? Any guidance would be appreciated as I have yet to find a suitable alternative. Thanks.

How much are they charging? Did you find a better plan?

Since you are going to be off-shore, things are a bit more complicated. You should post your question in the SGU pre-med and class forums. However, in a perfect world, this is what I would recommend health insurance wise negating the Caribbean complication. In rank order:

1. Stay on your parents plan until age 26. (I know, you probably already know this.)
2. See if you can get Medicaid coverage since you will have no or little income. (Might not be eligible in the Caribbean.)
3. Explore short term catastrophic medical plans. (But once again, the Caribbean issue.)
4. Look into ACA coverage, but being off-shore may make you ineligible.

That said, there is a link for International student health insurance on this site:

There are temporary health plans available for up to 12 months that cover healthcare internationally and in the US. Just google "short term health insurance" and you'll get lots of results.

I used one during my transition from age 26 to starting residency and it worked well (used it for a URI visit).

They are also cheap; I got about 7 months of coverage for $400 total.

That being said, be sure to read the fine print of what the insurance covers. Most are just catastrophic plans and do not meet ACA standards. Since you may not have income you won't have to pay the penalty for no insurance.
