Shadowing a DO resident

One of the doctors (MD) that works in oncology in the hospital I worked at said I could shadow one of his DO residents. I may have a hard time finding a DO doctor to shadow, would a resident be sufficient for the requirement some DO schools have or would that type of thing be frowned upon?

Go for it, nothing to be frowned upon. I shadowed residents and I got to see a lot of different rotations.

I think shadowing a resident is great but I don't think you need to push yourself to shadow a DO physician unless you can shadow someone in private practice that may practice osteopathy a little more traditionally, ie. practicing OMM on patients. I think whether you shadow a DO physician or a MD physician who works like every other physician isn't what makes the difference; it's more about what does the DO physician do that makes him/her different. I am not saying that you should only seek out a DO doc that practices OMM (I am a resident that does not practice it), I just think if you're goal is to get a true experience of shadowing a DO whether it is for your personal benefit or for the application, if you really want to see what osteopathy is about, I would seek out someone that is truly practicing it.

I mean he's technically a practicing physician after pgy-1 so why not.

Yeah, this is my goal to get somebody who actually uses OMM to see what it's all about. I've shadowed an MD physician, but some of the DO schools require shadowing with a DO and I would like to see how if there is really much of a difference. I think they're a little hard to find though.

I agree. Not a lot practice OMM anymore. You may want to check the AOA website and see if they have a list of practicing DOs and just do some cold calling to see what you can find.

Ok, I'd seen that somewhere else on here, but I've seen people have mixed results so we'll see. I may just have to wait til med school to see what OMM is all about lol
