Hi,

I am a pre-medical student and I will be shadowing an interventional radiologist this summer. I have a general idea and grasp about this field and the minimally invasive methods involving catheters, etc. To what extent can I observe a radiologist? I don't know If I am allowed to see the actual procedures up close and if radiologists actually directly interact with patients?

Your post seems like it conflicts itself (you understand what IR encompasses, but are asking about patient contact), or are you asking about IR vs DR in shadowing?

I think what you're permitted to see depends on the institution. Some institutions don't want you in the IR/OR suites unless you have malpractice insurance.

You should be able to observe some of the procedures the IR guys do, I would recommend not observing a diagnostic radiologist as it can get very boring and you will not have any idea of what they are looking at. IR is pretty fun though depending on the procedure.

Why are you shadowing an IR? I would think as pre-med you would want to shadow an FP or internist? Showing your future medical school how interested you are in primary care:naughty:, learning how to interact with patients, seeing common complaints etc etc. Either way radiology is the best field and IR is a fun sub-specialty.

Where are you located / looking to shadow? I couple hopefully find someone good to contact...
