I have been trying to coordinate shadowing with a local DO and the freakin' volunteer office won't call me back!! I was originally just going to go in and shadow. When I called to schedule with the doctor's office I was told I had to fill out some paperwork with the volunteer office.

I filled out the necessary paperwork and was told that I had to wait for the volunteer office do something with it and call me. So, after a week I called the volunteer office and asked if they had finished my paperwork. I was told that they were just looking at it and would call me back.

They called me back and asked if I could come in the next day at 9a for orientation. Sadly, they called during my class from 6-8p. I called and left a message that I would, unfortunately, be unable to show up the next day at 9a as I have to work. (Who can drop everything with 14hrs. notice anyway??!?) I asked them to please call me to reschedule.

The next day I waited....and called around 1p and left a message for the contact person who was not there. I waited the entire day and next day....no call. I have been leaving messages for this person everyday for a week now. I even tried to get one of the other people in the volunteer office to help me to no avail.

I have been trying to coordinate this shadowing since AUGUST TENTH!! What the heck is going on? Is this typical behavior for a hospital volunteer office??

Grrrrr......

rant over.

Try actually going to the office in person.

Yeah, I guess I will have to take Friday off and drive out there. This shouldn't be such a big deal. I shouldn't have to beg the volunteer office to let me shadow a physician who WANTS to help me.

I had trouble finding volunteer/shadowing options too. Have you been trying more than one place? I found, by chance, that the local health department in my county has volunteering in their clinics of which is also a place that a local osteopathic medical school does rotations at. Maybe you could try that? I had also resorted to calling all the DO's basically in my area without avail - I even scheduled an appointment as a patient with a DO so that I could talk to them about their experience and to ask if I could shadow (that may be an option to try too). If they won't accomodate shadowing they may be able to point you to another DO that they know will.

And as for going to the volunteer office in person - I would do that too, but I would make sure that there is actually someone in the office before I go because that may just piss you off even more if you go all the way over there and there isn't anyone there. Good luck!

If you are anywhere near a DO school I would look at the list of hospitals where the students do rotations. call the volunteer office there and tell them of your interest of seeing DOs in acttion. Worked for me.

:luck:

Why not just call a DO in private practice, skip the middle man, and do your shadowing.

This DO I want to shadow contacted me as part of a mentorship program. The hospitals he works at are teaching hospitals that get students rotating from several different school, both DO and MD.
