I shadowed a dentist at a very very small clinic, and I basically served the role as a (basic) dental assistant. I pressed the button for the curing light tool, pressed the button for the x-ray, and operated the suction hose and air-water syringe. I'm not a licensed dental assistant so I'm wondering if I was allowed to do those things.

Depends on your state regulations. Maybe there's a poster board at the office outlining what a person can do without licensing there's one at mine. In my state I'm pretty sure you can do all , EXCEPT the xray button pressing here you have to get certified to "press the button" but rules vary from state to state
