Hi guys,

I was wondering if those who are currently applying/ already applied could shed some light on some questions I had for shadowing?

Currently, I work in an Ophthalmic MD/ Optometry office where the main doctor I work under is the MD. I am a medical scribe for him as well as an ophthalmic technician (minus doing refractions.) Would you guys consider this to be enough for optometry exposure/experience or is it too far off since I mainly work with the MD? Occasionally, I work with the optometrists by working up their patients when they're busy.

I ask because so far, I have over 1 year of experience with this practice and about 10 hours of separate optometrist shadowing. Would you guys recommend more shadowing specifically with an optometrist or would you consider my job as optometric experience as well?

Thank you!

Personally speaking, I think that would be great exposure. You're not getting "family practice" experience with an OMD unless he/she is a general OMD. That practice is probably heavy in disease management, and I think any school would be interested in cultivating the relationship with that clinic and hearing the OMD's take on your skills.
