Hey everyone,

I was wondering if you guys could share what your shadowing experiences were like. I'm going in for my first time on Thursday (tomorrow), and I'm not sure what to expect and what I will/should be doing. Also, what about shadowing etiquette? Like, if I have a question that comes up while he's seeing his patient, should I ask the question later after he's finished? Thanks!

I'm doing some shadowing for the first time next wednesday. I hope it goes well. I'm glad I asked what to wear though because I'm not sure if I would have worn known that I should wear a tie.

I imagine when I get home from shadowing it would be a good idea to document whatever I can remember so that when it comes up in the interview at the optometry school, I'll remember and know what to say.

Hi,

I've job shadowed two different offices, one in a hospital setting where they worked along with OMDs and the other in a private practice. For guys, I don't think a tie is necessary, but I suppose it's better to be over-dressed than under! For women, nice pants or a skirt would do.

You should take note of the OD's specialities and what the differences between the various settings are (private vs. commercial). Also, after the experience, which type of setting would you prefer to work in and why.

i think a lab coat is fine, cause some optometry place i go to, i see them with a lab coat the white ones with their little pocket protector.

I have to wear a tie - that's what the OD told me to wear when I asked him.

I didn't realize that optometrists worked in hospitals. I'll have to make a note to try to shadow one in a hospital, and maybe one in a commercial setting too.

Having multiple different shadowing experiences in different settings will probably look good on the application.

Now if I can just get the damn OAT scores up!
