I finally found a D.O to shadow, and he was great!! Osteopathic medicine is very interesting and I can't wait to apply! For those of you who have shadowed D.O.'s before, how long did you shadow them before you asked for a letter of recommendation? Also, on another note, how often did you guys shadow? I think I am gonna shadow this semester and during the summer.

Thanks!

I waited a little over a month to ask for the recommendation. But this was after only a few days of me shadowing him. It was difficult for me to find days when he was working and I was off from work. If I had it to do all over again, I would shadow him for a longer period of time. This would have given him the chance to get to know me better and thus, provide a better LOR.

Glad you had a positive experience.

You can shadow a month and then feel like you can get a recommendation. Or if you sit down and talk with the doctor, give her/him your personal statement then you may be able to get one sooner. Hopefully they will let you shadow throughout the semester.
