I am having such a hard time finding a doctor to shadow. I live in NY and there is 1 million DO's that work here but it seems like no one has the time. They keep saying email us but then never get back.

So i get into the office and ofcourse ask the front desk if I can speak to the Doctor. They always tell me the doctors busy would you like to leave him a message. So I do and they never get back to me. I call and the doctor always seems to be busy ughhhhhh

Any suggestions?

First of all, go to this site and sign up, then start sending requests for physicians in your area. Try to send requests to the ones that prefer face to face contact. I have shadowed two DOs from this site.

Your second option would be to start sending letters to DOs in your area. A one page letter introducing yourself and explain why do you want to shadow them; make sure to include your contact info. Sign the letter with a pen, it makes it more personal. Address the envelope to the physician, not the group name nor facility/hospital. From prior experience, I would advise you to stay away from physicians who practice in a big hospital, as you will have to jump through a lot of hoops from HR, HIPAA training, and such.
I have sent approximately 20 letters, and I heard back from 5, shadowed 4 of them. This method works way better than cold calling, sending emails, or even showing up at the office. Good luck!

hey im a foreign trained dentist came to usa 1 year back..now preparing my self for nbde part 1.n still gathering info related with the studies in usa.. I need to ask what is the difference in observation and shadow work r they both the same?i heard in my country the observation word not shadow that's y asking ..otherthing can we do observation in the clinic if dentist allow us ??and what question s dentist usually ask during interview for observation??how much minimum time we should do observation ??like 2 months r 3 months? plz guide me thnx

I use observations and shadowing interchangeably. So did the HR workers at the hospital that I have shadowed in.

@Tr1LL the site is a great lead. I too have mailed out plenty snail mail requesting to shadow with little feedback. Definitely mailing more letter this time with the contacts from the site. Hope I'll get more love this time. Thank you.

Finally, I got 1 shadow... hoorraayyy... It will be in July though. I hope it'll be fine with my DO apps... This is great, regardless!!!
