I was wondering that when you're shadowing a dentist, does it matter to the dental school if you shadow a general dentist or a specialist? Also, how recent does it have to be? I'm starting my sophomore year of undergrad next year, but this past christmas I interned/shadowed my orthodontist for 80 hours. I'm not sure though if I should do something with a general dentist as well. Thanks.

It may or may not matter to a particular dental school, but it should matter to you. By limiting your contact with strictly a specialty, your are missing understanding what (general) dentistry is all about and that, like it or not, you will have to deal with, at least while in dental school. Even if you are dead set on ortho only as the field of choice, you may find yourself in a quandary should you have difficulty entering a residency program.

yeah I think most if not all dental schools want to see you shadowing at least some with a general dentist, you are applying to dental school, not an orthodontics program, having said that shadowing specialists is still certainly good exposure.
