Hey everyone!

I am pre-dental student, and I recently started shadowing at a dental clinic. There are 3 general dentists there, but I don't get to see them everyday. I also shadowed 2 oral surgeons at the same dental clinic each for one day only for about 5-6 hours. In the end when I'm done shadowing, will I count all the hours together or do I have to list them separately on the application? If yes then, won't it look weird shadowing two oral surgeons for only 6 hours? They only come once in 2 months and I'll be done shadowing soon. Is it ok? Or can we list all those hours together?

I would list them separately. The application asks for the specific dentists name not just the clinic observed at. I wouldnt think it would look bad just having 5-6 hours with the oral surgeons. If anything I think it will look better as they will be able to tell you have observed multiple people instead of just one the entire time.

Thank you so much for your reply 🙂 You are right and plus I have seen 13 extractions in just 5-6 hours, so it won't look that bad if I list the oral surgeons for just 5-6 hours

Concentrate on general dentistry. Most schools prefer the bulk of hours to be from there!

Thank you for your advice. Overall, I'll be shadowing 4 general, 2 oral surgeons, 1 pediatric, and 1 ortho.

Is that ok?

Yeah, but once you get over a certain threshold # of hours shadowing is irrelevant. Do 100 between a few GPs and maybe one day a piece at those specialists.

You would be better served to do a mission of mercy volunteer or maybe focus on some interesting extracurriculars. Once you've seen a procedure done it gets repetitive. No interview asked about specialists or # of hours, they wanted to know what made me stand out. Focus on that!

Perfect (Y) Thanks a lot once again. Yes! My main goal is to shadow 4 General Dentists for 100 hours, ortho. for 20 and one oral surgeon for 12-14 atleast. I'll volunteer at a pediatrics clinic because I really want to see how one deals with kids. Also, I have this oral suregon who is basically my dad's friend, so I'll volunteer him for a few hours too.but the problem is that he lives out of country, can I put such volunteer work in my application?

And planning to volunteer for dentistry from heart organization for one day.
I love photography, so I'll do something with that as well because one of the dentists mentioned that it is something different and will make you stand out as dentistry is also an art of teeth. I am a memeber of an honors society. I can also put that on the list. Then, I'll volunteer in a soup kitchen and etc and participate in research as well. I don't have any good work experience though. Any other suggestions that you would like to give?

You shouldn't apply to dental school unless you're comfortable with becoming a general dentist. With that being said, its important to shadow general dentists so you understand the field and what you are potentially getting yourself into.

I agree with you 🙂 that's the reason why dental schools recommend shadowingg, right?
