I'm a US MS4 hoping to do a 4 wk elective in Shanghai. I know shanghai east/tonji has a foreign medical student elective program. Anyone know if they will take a student for 4 wks instead of the 8 that is listed on the website? Would be great to hear from anyone with experience in the prgm.

Ask our FAO Director Mr. Zhu in Fudan U. www.fao.fudan.edu.cn
He is in charge of med electives: [email protected]
Zhongshan and Huashan Hospital and other affliated hospitals are top ones in China.
Some one send him email and got approved for 4 weeks electives, if you are a med student in China, you can even ask for more months of internship.
BTW, if you will come to Shanghai someday please send me a thread.
And for free, except for your own arrangement of travel and accomendation.

That sounds great, my family actually lives right next to fudan since my grandparents were professors at fudan univ.

If I send him an email, does it need to be in mandarin or is english ok?

Wondering the same. I think you should send in Mandarin, it's the dominant language. When you rotate, you need to speak mandarin in order to interact. Or is everything done in english?

Hi, I'm not a medical student, I am pre med, but I did intern/shadow at Shanghai East International Medical Center for 2 1/2 months. Though the website does say things like that, they do allow 4 weeks. In general it is 2 week rotation per department, but you probably can request once you arrive depending on you.

I met a few Germans who did do 4 weeks but to truly maximize your experience it is best to do the 8 weeks. They give you a certificate in the end that has your filled out hours that you spent in the hospital.

Have fun! It is a very interesting place, different ethics and medical treatments. More than 6,000 patients are seen in that hospital so plenty of exposure to various cases.

For the English/Mandarin, English is fine, the professor or coordinator of the program usually knows English. 🙂
Plus, the older head departments love trying to speak English so they will want to practice it with you. Haha

Hello,

The Shanghai East Hospital offers clinical medical electives in Pudong, Shanghai. The hospital is practicing mainly western medicine, but also has a smaller branch of traditional chinese medicine (TCM).
There is a 4-week option available at the 'Famulatur' program and an 8- to 16-week option for the 'Practical Year' option. SInce the international student program is quite large, you will also have the chance to meet a few other international students there at all times.
Medical electives are possible in surgery, internal medicine and anesthesia. TCM rotations are only available to a very limited extend.

The teaching language is English and there is no Mandarin knowledge required to successfully complete the elective. Any knowledge of the Chinese language at any level will certainly be helpful though, as the majority of patients does not speak any English.

All information about the hospital and the international medical electives, as well as about application are available at http://medopolo.com/
Application to the program is possible at the latest 6 months in advance.
