I recently did a working interview at a dental office in NYC (VMC Dental Dr. Patel). The owner, Dr. Patel, initially promised a base pay for the working interview, but later went back on her word and refused to honor the agreement. After the first day, she encouraged me to return and assured me a formal contract would be provided. However, she never showed up again, and we eventually agreed that it wasn’t a good fit.
When I followed up regarding compensation for the working interview and the additional two days I worked, she ignored all of my messages. I even called the office, and the front desk staff told me directly that she refused to pay the originally promised rate—or any compensation at all.
This kind of behavior is highly unprofessional and shows a serious lack of respect for others’ time and effort. I had turned down another opportunity because I trusted her word. Instead of communicating directly, Dr. Patel hides behind her staff and avoids accountability.
The office also advertises that they sponsor H1B visas and green cards, but based on my experience, I seriously question whether they operate with integrity. I worry they may take advantage of employees’ immigration status and use it as leverage.
A word of caution to others: there are unfortunately some red-flag dental office owners out there. I've worked in multiple practices, and some owners can be deceptive. Protect yourself—get everything in writing before committing.
