I've been shaving my head completely for over a year regulary. Not to look cool, but due to baldness. I love it, but is it professional to have a completely shaved look for the residency interview? Is it too radical? I can't really "grow it out". You think it shouldn't be a problem? Thanks in advance! Good Luck to all!🙂 (Kind of look like the smiley face acutally)

It's fine. I'm surprised you haven't figured out that shaved heads aren't all that unusual these days.

Besides, what else would you do...wear a toupee? 😉

its definitely usual, but some PD's are definitely conservative. I just wanted someone to approve what I already know. Thanks for the reply.

Just cover up those biker tats and you'll be fine. 🙂

That's why we wear a suit, so nothing shows. 🙂 Once the scrubs come on, the contract is already signed.

Just don't show up looking like this:

Although I'd give you $2 if you did.

The combover: your only choice at matching.

Is there a "standard professional haircut" out there nowadays anyway?

I thought aside from sporting a mohawk or hair that flies around in all directions like a crazy scientist, guys were pretty much immune from bad hairstyles for an interview.

Hey, "bald is beautiful", right?

At least, its FAR better than the combover!

I wouldn't worry about it - I don't think medicine, even as conservative as it is, sees a shaved head as akin to "radical, will kill patients wily-nily".😀

that's funny stuff, comical gold. thanks guys. I just wanted some encouragement.

P.S. Dr. Cox: Being a die hard scrubs fan myself, do you ever feel depressed when the episode is over. I always get so involved and view them as my buddies, only to remember that its just a show. ::::::sigh:::::::.

Uhh...no. Despite my avatar, I have only watched a few episodes of the show. Blame my unpredictable schedule. The reason for the avatar lies in my sig line...

but sorry to hear you find yourself depressed after each episode. Its out on DVD - perhaps you could pick up the first few seasons and make yourself feel better! 😉

Sorry Dr. Cox I assumed wrong. Yes, I do own all the DVD's, it's just not enough. Maybe if time permits you can give it another chance. Thanks for all your posts! Best of luck everyone!

I actually own the DVDs too...gifts from my brother who loves the series (and isn't remotely medical). But I do rather like Dr. Cox's snarkiness...most unlike me, but hey...poetic license, eh?

One of these days I plan on watching them, as well as the Nip/Tuck, and Grey's Anatomy DVDs I've been given (thank goodness no one has given me Dr. 90210...I don't think I could stand more of that!!). 😀

The only alternative to the completely bald shaven head for 'professional' people like you (or my brother in law, who's a bank president and bald as anything) is the micro-cut. This is a haircut in which hair is present, but very very short all around - ya know, the shaver is set on 1, or somesuch.

Anyway, it can look nearly as good as the shaven bald head with some of the 'respectability' of hair.

Then again, I personally prefer the clean shave. But I'm not in any kind of position of power, so what I think matters not.

One of my residency colleagues has "male-pattern baldness", and shaves his head completely. He was going to join the Navy, but that fell through, and there was one other thing - to be in the military, you cannot be completely bald, so he would have had to grow in the "monk" or "Lobot" (from The Empire Strikes Back) look - and, on a 30 year old guy, it is a little funny looking.

im lucky i have a nicely shaped head kind of like this: 🙂 . Shaved it is, or just scruffy if I have no motivation.
